To check Gemini’s Maps access, sign in to the Gemini account you mean to check, then open Settings & help → Connected Apps. If you do not see Connected Apps, look under Personal Intelligence. Also check whether Keep Activity is on. These controls matter, but they do not answer every kind of access question: Google distinguishes public Maps information from personal Maps data and precise device location.
Check Connected Apps and Keep Activity
- Confirm the account and Gemini surface. Sign in to the account you want to check on Gemini web or in the mobile app. Available settings can differ by platform, country, language, and account type, so a missing menu is not conclusive proof that Gemini cannot use public Maps information.
- Open Connected Apps. In Gemini, go to Settings & help → Connected Apps. If that option is not shown, check Personal Intelligence → Connected Apps. Review the Google services listed for your account and follow the on-screen instructions to change a setting. Google notes that Connected Apps availability varies by account and surface; see Use & manage Connected Apps in Gemini.
- Check Keep Activity. Google says Keep Activity must be on for Gemini to use public information from Maps, Flights, Hotels, and YouTube. If it is off, Connected Apps are unavailable on gemini.google.com and iOS; on Android, only certain listed apps remain available. The exact controls shown can vary.
- Check the capability you care about. For place discovery and directions, Google lists signing in to Gemini and turning on Keep Activity as requirements. Ask a practical question such as “Where’s the closest coffee shop and what time does it open?” Google describes finding places, business details, and directions in Find places & get directions in Gemini Apps.
Understand what “access to Maps” means
Gemini’s ability to use public Maps information is not the same as access to your personal Maps account data. Google says Gemini may use public Maps information automatically, and Connected Apps controls do not change that public-information behavior. Google also says Gemini does not access personal information or content in these services without permission. A Connected Apps switch alone therefore does not prove that every Maps-related data flow is off.
Google’s documented Gemini Maps feature can find places and provide directions, but it does not support saving location history, using saved places other than Home or Work, providing live traffic updates, or adding reviews. Those limits concern this Gemini feature, not every feature within Google Maps.
Check location permission separately
If your concern is whether Gemini can use your current location, check the relevant Gemini app or browser location permission on your device. Google says Gemini may estimate a general location from an IP address or Home/Work details, and may process precise device or browser location with permission. It may also receive precise location from another Google service, such as Maps, even when the Google app’s precise-location setting is off. See Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.

For Gemini Apps Activity, Google says precise location processed with device or browser permission is not stored in that activity, and that location data it processes is coarsened before storage. Google defines a “general area” in this context as larger than 3 square kilometers and having at least 1,000 users. This statement is specific to Gemini Apps Activity; it is not a guarantee about every Google service or all Maps feature storage.
Review or delete Gemini activity
On Gemini web, Google gives Settings & help → Activity and the My Activity page as routes to review Gemini activity. From there, users can delete Gemini Apps Activity or turn Keep Activity off. Account for Maps features beyond Gemini chat
Google Maps features that use AI can involve location and account information independently of a Connected Apps setting in Gemini. Google lists Ask Maps answers, Lens in Maps, and Gemini in Navigation among features that use or collect location data; its Maps help page says Gemini in Navigation may store location. Google also says Search services settings are rolling out gradually, and Web & App Activity continues to control history and personalized recommendations where the newer settings do not yet match. What to conclude from what you see
- If Connected Apps is listed, review the services and settings actually displayed for your account; availability and labels can vary.
- If it is missing, check Personal Intelligence and Keep Activity before drawing a conclusion. A missing toggle does not establish that Gemini cannot use public Maps information.
- If the concern is saved Maps history or precise location, check those separately: a Connected Apps setting does not resolve either question by itself.
- If this is a work or school account, some activity controls may be managed by an administrator.
