You can reduce risk by getting the release from the emulator project’s own official site or repository, checking that the file and publisher match the project’s information, avoiding repackaged installers, and keeping Windows security protections on and up to date.
Start with the emulator project’s official release
Find the project’s own website or official source repository, then follow its link to the release. Check that the release name and the Windows build you are downloading match what the project describes. A search result, advertisement, or prominent download button is not proof that a file is controlled by the project. Microsoft advises downloading software from trusted sources, including the official vendor’s website: Microsoft’s guidance on how malware can infect a PC.
Prefer a file you can trace directly to the project over a third-party download portal, mirror, or repackaged installer. A mirror may be legitimate, but its connection to the project should be clear. Avoid download managers and installers that bundle unrelated software; Microsoft warns that malware or potentially unwanted software can arrive with other programs, and recommends checking what an installation includes: Microsoft’s software-download advice.
Check the file and every installer screen
- Compare the downloaded file name and release with the project’s official release information.
- Look at any publisher information Windows displays. If it is missing or does not match information published by the project, pause and verify rather than assuming the file is genuine.
- Read each installer screen. Decline unrelated offers, and stop if the installer hides what it will install, requests permissions unrelated to the emulator, or tells you to turn off security protection.
These checks help establish whether a download is consistent with the project’s release; they do not prove the file is harmless. Microsoft recommends reading installation choices carefully and identifies misleading or bundled installation behavior as a concern: Microsoft’s malware guidance and Microsoft Defender guidance on potentially unwanted applications.

Understand a Windows reputation warning
An “unknown” reputation warning is not the same as a finding that the file is malware, but it is not a clean bill of health either. Microsoft says its warning can appear for software its reputation system does not yet recognize; uncommon software is not necessarily malicious. Treat the warning as a reason to stop and recheck the source and publisher. Do not disable antivirus or SmartScreen to force the file to run. See Microsoft’s explanation of SmartScreen warnings.
Keep Windows and browser protections enabled
Install current Windows and browser updates, and keep real-time antivirus protection and security intelligence current. Microsoft says Defender is built into modern Windows versions and recommends keeping protection up to date. Its potentially unwanted application guidance recommends enabling both app and download blocking; download blocking works with Microsoft Edge. If you already downloaded or installed the file
- If you have not run it: do not open it while you are unsure. Use Windows Security to scan the file and remove it if you do not want it.
- If you installed it: use Windows Security to scan your device. Microsoft describes full and offline scans as options when dealing with unwanted software; follow the scan results and remove software you do not want. See Microsoft’s unwanted-software guidance.
What Microsoft Store policy does—and does not—mean
Microsoft Store Policies version 7.20 states: “Products that emulate a game system or game platform are not allowed on any device family.” That is a rule for products distributed through the Store. It is not a malware assessment of every emulator available elsewhere, and a Store listing alone would not prove that a particular file is safe. Read the Microsoft Store policies.

A trusted-looking project page, popularity, open-source availability, or the absence of a warning from one scanner is not proof that a specific build is safe. No particular emulator file is assessed here. A meaningful judgment would require checking the exact download and its provenance; if the project, release, or publisher cannot be verified, do not run the file.
