To check how long your Chromebook is scheduled to receive updates, open Settings > About ChromeOS > Additional details and look under Update schedule. The date shown is the device’s scheduled last automatic update. To see whether an update is available today, use Settings > About ChromeOS > Check for updates instead; that checks the installed software, not the device’s support end date.
Find your Chromebook’s scheduled last update
- Select the time in the bottom-right corner of the screen, then open Settings.
- Select About ChromeOS.
- Select Additional details.
- Under Update schedule, read the date in the message “This device will get automatic updates until [date].” The date is specific to the Chromebook model.
Google describes the on-device Auto Update Expiration (AUE) date as its most reliable way to gauge a Chromebook’s age and remaining official support lifespan. Google Chromebook Help: Use or upgrade an old Chromebook
If the Chromebook belongs to a school or employer, the page may instead say that updates are managed by your administrator. Ask the administrator which update policy applies.
Check whether an update is available right now
- Connect the Chromebook to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings > About ChromeOS.
- Select Check for updates. If the option is unavailable, Google says the device may already be up to date.
- If ChromeOS downloads an update, restart the Chromebook to finish installing it.

“Up to date” is not the same as “still supported”
Check for updates reports whether a newer update is available now. Update schedule tells you how long the model is scheduled to receive automatic updates. A Chromebook can be up to date today and still have a future support end date.
Interpret the date and any final-update notice
- The date is in the future: The device remains within its listed automatic-update period as of the day you check.
- The date has passed: Its scheduled automatic updates have ended.
- You see a “Final software update” notification: Google says the Chromebook will no longer receive ChromeOS or browser updates, including security updates, bug fixes, and new features. Some existing apps or features that require newer versions may stop working.
Use the date listed for the exact model rather than estimating from when you bought it or how old it seems. A manufacturer’s end-of-sale date is not a reliable substitute: Google says end of sale is unrelated to Google update eligibility. Check Google’s Chromebook update schedule guidance for details.

How Google’s 10-year update policy applies to older Chromebooks
Google’s current Auto Update policy says ChromeOS devices receive 10 years of updates, measured from the platform release date. That is not a promise of 10 years of remaining support from the day you buy a particular Chromebook; use the model’s listed date to establish its schedule. Google’s Auto Update policy lists device-specific end dates.
Some models released before 2021 need an administrator to opt in to extended updates. Google marks these models with an asterisk in the policy list. For eligible devices, see Extended updates support. Extended updates for some older models do not include Play Store or Android app support, so continued ChromeOS updates do not necessarily mean all existing app capabilities remain available.

What to do when a Chromebook’s update schedule has ended
You can keep using the Chromebook, but it will no longer receive the scheduled software updates. If continued official ChromeOS updates matter to you, consider switching to a newer Chromebook and check the exact replacement model’s end date in Google’s Auto Update policy before buying. For a school- or employer-managed device, ask its administrator about the applicable policy.
