Do not reuse an old charger or cable just because it still charges a device. Inspect the cable, connectors, adapter and plug; stop using it if you find damage or notice sparks, smoke, unusual heat, smells, crackling or unreliable charging. Keep charging equipment dry and ventilated, and replace a USB charger when its replace-by date arrives—or after ten years, following Electrical Safety First’s guidance.
What to inspect before plugging it in
Cable and connectors
Look over the cable’s full length, paying close attention to the ends where it meets a connector. Do not use it if the outer covering is split, frayed, worn through or otherwise damaged, or if material inside is exposed. Apple’s guidance for its accessories is to stop using a cable with a worn or damaged outer layer.
Adapter and plug
Check the adapter casing for cracks, damage or discoloration. Examine the plug blades or prongs for bending, looseness, missing pieces, breakage or blackening. Do not use a damaged adapter or plug. Apple’s UK support guidance says: “If your power adapter, AC wall adapter or AC power cable has been damaged, stop using it.” Apple Support: Using Apple power adapters, cables and duckheads with Apple products.
Warning signs during use
Stop using the charger or cable if it sparks, crackles, smokes, smells unusual, shows burn marks, swells, becomes excessively hot or charges intermittently. Electrical Safety First advises unplugging a USB charger and contacting the retailer or manufacturer if warning signs such as smoke, smell, sparks, swelling or damage appear. Do not keep testing an accessory that has shown a warning sign.

If the plug or outlet itself seems to be the source of sparks or heat, stop using that outlet and have the cause checked. If a damaged plug blade is stuck in the outlet, do not touch it or try to pull it out. Apple advises turning off power to the outlet at the breaker if that can be done safely; if you cannot safely isolate or confirm the power is off, contact a qualified electrician.
Use it only in safe conditions
- Keep the charger, cable, device and your hands dry. Do not charge when moisture is present.
- Use the adapter in a well-ventilated place. Do not cover it with bedding or leave it in an enclosed, poorly ventilated space.
- Follow the device maker’s safety and charging instructions. Apple’s iPhone safety guidance addresses moisture, ventilation and fire or electric-shock risks for Apple charging equipment.
Check compatibility and age
Confirm that the connector and charger meet the requirements in the device maker’s instructions. A cable or adapter that fits physically is not, by that fact alone, confirmed compatible.

Electrical Safety First’s UK-facing advice for USB chargers is to replace them every ten years or when a replace-by date is reached. This is that organization’s recommendation, not a legal requirement or a universal age limit for every cable, adapter, device or market. The guidance is on its USB charger safety page.
Decide whether to reuse or replace

What to do if you are unsure
Do not dismantle or try to repair a faulty charger. Ask the manufacturer or retailer about service, or choose a compatible replacement charging cable or device-compatible USB power adapter from a reputable retailer. Replace only the item that fails inspection or is due for replacement; age alone does not mean every cable must be discarded.
