To check whether an NFT marketplace or collection is still active, look for recent completed sales and verify representative transactions on the blockchain. Listings and offers add context, but an asking price, nonzero floor, or old listing alone does not prove that buyers are trading. There is no universal cutoff for “active,” so use a stated time window and describe the evidence you find.

Check the exact collection before judging its activity

Start with the collection’s chain and smart-contract address, not just its name. Similar names can refer to unrelated projects. An item page can show its chain, token ID, contract link, and activity history; see OpenSea’s guide to reviewing an item page.

Compare the contract address shown on the item or collection page with the address on the project’s linked website and official social accounts. OpenSea recommends reviewing a collection’s linked channels even when buying and selling activity is visible (OpenSea Stats pages). Trading activity does not, by itself, establish that a collection is authentic.

Choose a time window and look for completed sales

Pick a recent period, such as 7 or 30 days, and compare it with a longer period for context. OpenSea’s collection Analytics documentation lists 1h, 1d, 7d, 30d, 1y, and all-time windows; these are interface choices, not a definition of what counts as active (collection Analytics tab).

#1 Best Overall

Completed sales are stronger evidence of recent marketplace use than listings or offers. Volume shows aggregate value, but check the displayed currency and what the metric includes: OpenSea says its Stats-page volume can include SeaDrop mint volume as well as secondary sales (OpenSea Stats pages). Marketplace analytics may also be venue- or chain-specific, so do not assume one platform’s figures capture every transaction.

Read listings, offers, and floor price as different signals

New listings show seller interaction; offers show buyer interest, but neither is a completed transaction. OpenSea’s Insights view distinguishes sales, mints, transfers, listings, item offers, collection offers, and trait offers, and provides listing-depth and floor-trend views (Insights Section guide).

The floor price is the cheapest current listing, not a sale price or a promise that an item can be sold for that amount. OpenSea defines it as the lowest-priced item for sale in a collection; its collection stats documentation notes the floor is zero when no listing exists and that floor and volume may use different currencies (Insights Section guide; Get collection stats). A visible floor can coexist with little or no recent buyer activity.

Verify transactions on the correct blockchain

When a sale matters to your decision, open its transaction on a blockchain explorer and confirm it is recorded on the chain associated with that transaction. Explorers show activity for their own chain; for example, Base activity should be checked on BaseScan rather than Etherscan, according to OpenSea’s sales-records guidance. OpenSea’s API overview likewise describes its API in terms of supported chains.

An item’s Activity tab can help you trace its history. OpenSea says it can show past owners, sales, and the original minter (Review your item page). Verify the chain and contract identity as well as the event; a name match alone is not enough.

Assess a marketplace across its supported chains

For a marketplace rather than one collection, check whether it shows recent sales, transfers, listings, and offers across the chains it supports. Then verify a sample of transactions on each relevant chain’s explorer. A marketplace can have activity on one chain and little or none on another, and a single collection’s quiet period does not establish that the whole venue is inactive.

If you are comparing marketplaces or collections, use the same time window and chain scope. Compare completed-sale count and volume, how recently sales occurred, listing depth and turnover, offer activity, and whether transactions can be checked on-chain. Before comparing volume, confirm its currency and whether minting is included; the figures may not cover the same venues or activity.

Separate activity from health and trust

Recent verified transactions establish that activity occurred during the period you checked. They do not establish that trading is organic, that prices are fair, that the project is reputable, or that the marketplace is currently reliable. Record the window and the specific signals—such as completed sales and verified transactions—instead of applying an unsupported numerical threshold.
