The safest way to check an Android APK is to start with its source, then verify its identity and review Android’s security signals before you install it. Get the file from the developer’s official site or a trusted app store, keep Google Play Protect enabled, and stop if you see a warning or a mismatch. A clean scan or valid signature is useful evidence, but neither guarantees an app is safe.
Start by checking where the APK came from
Prefer Google Play or another trusted app store. If you need an APK directly, navigate to the developer’s official website yourself rather than following an unexpected link in a message or advertisement. Be cautious with mirror sites unless you can independently verify that the developer endorses them.
Android describes apps installed outside Google Play or other trusted stores as apps from unknown sources and warns that they can increase risks to your device and data. Google reported on 30 March 2026 that its recent analysis found over 90 times more malware from sideloaded sources than on Google Play. That is Google’s broad comparison, not the probability that any individual APK is malicious; the published passage does not explain the study’s method, denominator, or time window. Google’s Android developer verification announcement gives the finding and its attribution.
Check that the app is the one you intended to download
Compare the app name, developer, package identity, and version with information from the publisher’s trusted website or store listing. A familiar name or icon is not enough: either can be copied. If the publisher’s stated identity differs from what Android or the download source shows, do not proceed until you have independently resolved the discrepancy.

Review Google Play Protect
Keep Play Protect enabled and pay attention to the result it presents. Google documents states including protection being off, no scan data yet, no detected issue, potentially harmful apps, dangerous apps, and an unevaluated check. A result indicating no issue means that the assessment did not detect one; it is not a safety certificate. Google also notes that harmful-app analyses can produce false positives and false negatives in its SafetyNet Verify Apps API documentation.
The verdicts described in Google’s Play Integrity documentation are API signals for participating developers. Google does not present that API as a public service where consumers upload an APK and receive a definitive safety verdict.

Compare a publisher-provided checksum or signing identity
If the developer publishes a checksum or signing-certificate fingerprint through a channel you already trust, compare it with the downloaded APK using a suitable verifier. A matching checksum supports the conclusion that your file matches the one the publisher identified. A matching signing identity supports continuity with the expected signing key.
Android requires APKs to be signed and uses signing keys to help ensure that updates match the installed app. That protects app identity and update continuity; it does not prove the publisher is trustworthy or that the app is benign. Understand the install permission before granting it
The setting that allows an app to install APKs is a gate, not a safety check. On Android 8.0 (API 26) and later, installation permission is granted to a particular source, such as a browser or file manager. Grant it only to the source you are deliberately using for the install, and turn it off afterward if you no longer need it. Older Android versions use a different unknown-sources setting, and screens can vary by Android version and device manufacturer. Google outlines the distinction in its alternative distribution guidance.
Stop if a warning or mismatch appears
- Do not bypass a Play Protect warning or proceed when the result is unclear.
- Do not install if the developer identity, package identity, checksum, or signing identity differs from what the publisher says to expect.
- Do not let urgency or pressure substitute for verification.
- Do not assume an “Install Anyway” option means Android has cleared the app. In its 19 March 2026 explanation of developer verification, Google said users proceeding through the described advanced flow would still see a warning that the app came from an unverified developer. The warning remains meaningful even if the user can continue: Android’s developer verification explanation.
Developer-verification screens and availability can vary as rollout and device conditions change. Follow the warning shown on your device rather than treating the ability to continue as proof of safety.

Use the checks together, not as guarantees
Source trust, app identity, Play Protect, and publisher-provided file information answer different questions. A reputable source reduces exposure to tampered or deceptive downloads; matching identity and checksums help establish that the file is the expected one; Play Protect may flag known or suspected threats. None of these checks proves that an app’s behavior is harmless. If you cannot verify the source or resolve a warning or mismatch, do not install the APK.
