Check the portrait in a consistent order: facial and body anatomy, pose, details and texture, lighting and physical interactions, then the wider scene. These checks can reveal inconsistencies, but no single visual clue proves an image was AI-generated—and a convincing image does not prove it is an authentic photograph. Visual realism and image provenance are separate questions.
How to inspect the portrait
Look at the image as a whole before zooming in. Then compare related features and physical cues rather than judging one isolated detail. A useful checklist is:
- Face and anatomy: Check whether the eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and facial proportions fit together naturally. Look for geometry that seems inconsistent between nearby features. If the body is visible, consider whether proportions and limb lengths look coherent.
- Pose and physical contact: Ask whether the pose is plausible and whether visible joints are positioned consistently with it. Check whether hands, clothing, toys, furniture, or another person make believable contact. OpenAI’s image-editing evaluation guidance includes limb and joint stability, body-shape preservation, and physical plausibility as useful checks; it is general guidance, not a child-specific diagnostic test.
- Texture and detail: Consider whether skin texture fits the apparent lighting and focus. Look for details that melt, duplicate, or change without an explanation. Smooth skin or a polished style alone is not evidence that a portrait is synthetic.
- Light and physical consistency: Compare highlights, shadows, reflections, and occlusions. They should make sense together and fit the depicted space. A face can look convincing by itself while appearing disconnected from the scene around it.
- Wider scene: Inspect clothing, background objects, and interactions. Check details that should repeat or connect, while allowing for intentional artistic choices. Style and sociocultural plausibility are distinct considerations, not universal rules for identifying an AI image.
These categories reflect the cues discussed in the 2024 guide “How to Distinguish AI-Generated Images from Authentic Photographs” and the checks in OpenAI’s image-evaluation guidance.
How much can visual clues tell you?
A visible mismatch is a reason to examine an image more carefully, not proof of its origin. The 2024 guide by Kamali, Nakamura, Chatzimparmpas, Hullman, and Groh groups suspected cues into five categories: anatomical, stylistic, functional, violations of physics, and sociocultural. The authors describe a collection of 138 diffusion-model-generated images, 9 images curated from social media, and 42 real photographs. Those materials are not a universal accuracy benchmark for people trying to identify AI images.

The guide cautions that human-perceptible artifacts are not always present and that provenance can be difficult to determine from pixels alone. So do not treat either an apparent flaw or the absence of one as a definitive test.
How to compare two portraits
Apply the same criteria to both images, and keep visual plausibility separate from evidence about origin. Compare:

- Body proportions, joints, and pose, when visible.
- Consistency of texture, lighting, shadows, and reflections.
- Whether the subject fits the background and interacts plausibly with objects or people.
- What reliable source context or provenance information is available.
A portrait that seems more realistic on these visual axes is not necessarily more authentic. To investigate origin, look for trustworthy information about who created or shared it and any available provenance records. In its addendum on GPT-4o native image generation, OpenAI describes a classifier intended to identify photorealistic children in uploaded images. The company says it can occasionally misclassify images, including flagging younger-looking adults as children, and that ambiguous cases are handled cautiously. This describes one provider’s safety system; it is not a general-purpose authenticity test, and its behavior should not be assumed for other tools.

Safety concerns also matter when a portrait depicts an identifiable child or uses a real child’s likeness. A joint statement published by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and co-signatories on 23 February 2026 raises concerns about potential harms to children, including cyber-bullying and exploitation, and calls for safeguards, meaningful transparency, accessible removal mechanisms, and enhanced measures for children. It notes that legal requirements vary by jurisdiction. UNICEF’s third edition of Guidance on AI and Children, published in December 2025, addresses AI-generated child sexual abuse material and non-consensual intimate images.
Before sharing a realistic portrait of an identifiable child, consider consent, privacy, whether viewers could mistake it for a real event, and the risks of wider distribution. Applicable legal obligations depend on where you are.
