To check an AI book recommendation, look for a clear disclosure beside the suggestion, identify who might benefit from it, and separate paid placement from personalization. Then examine the recommendation’s stated reasoning and compare its pattern with independent sources. A missing disclosure is a reason to ask questions—not proof that a recommendation was sponsored.

Check for a clear disclosure near the recommendation

Look beside the suggested title, link, or endorsement for wording such as “sponsored,” “paid promotion,” or a specific explanation of the recommender’s relationship with the book or seller. A disclosure is more useful when it says what the connection is—for example, that the recommender received payment or a free or discounted copy—rather than relying on a vague label.

In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission says financial relationships can include payment, free or discounted products, and other perks. Disclosure can be appropriate even if the person believes the relationship did not affect their opinion. The FTC advises: “The closer the disclosure is to your recommendation, the better.” Its guidance also notes that “affiliate link” may not clearly tell every reader that the recommender can earn money if a purchase follows. See the FTC’s Endorsement Guides: What People Are Asking.

That guidance is US-specific; disclosure requirements can differ elsewhere. A missing or unclear notice warrants caution and further checking, but it does not by itself establish that a recommendation was paid.

Separate personalization from sponsorship

A system may recommend a book because it fits your activity or stated preferences without anyone paying for that particular placement. Conversely, a personalized recommendation could also be sponsored. These are separate questions: personalization concerns why a suggestion may fit you; sponsorship concerns whether a material relationship influenced its presentation.

Amazon says shopping recommendations may use purchase history, reviews you have authored, saved Lists, searches, and conversations with Alexa for Shopping. Those inputs explain possible personalization; they do not show that every recommendation based on them is paid. Amazon describes the feature in How to view and edit your Amazon shopping preferences with About You. Where available, About You lets customers inspect and edit personal details that shape shopping recommendations. Changing those details can help you assess personalization, but it cannot establish whether an item is sponsored.

Evaluate the reason given for the suggestion

Check whether the explanation connects the book to what you asked for: a genre, theme, author, reading history, or other preference. Ask whether it actually respects your request, including any exclusions. An explanation is evidence of the apparent basis for the suggestion, not independent proof of the system’s internal process or of whether a commercial relationship exists.

Compare the recommendation outside its original service

Search for the title through sources with different ownership or incentives, such as independent review outlets, library discovery tools, or other book-discovery services. Look for whether the reasons given elsewhere match your interests, and whether the recommendation appears across genuinely independent sources rather than being repeated from one promotional listing. A single title appearing in several places is not conclusive if those sources share the same incentives or material.

Look for patterns across a set of recommendations

One recommendation cannot establish that an AI system has a systematic bias. A repeated pattern is more informative: for example, suggestions that keep favoring bestsellers, authors from one region, or a narrow group of publishers even when you ask for variety may indicate popularity or representation issues.

Studies of historical book datasets and evaluated recommendation algorithms have found popularity bias and, for some evaluated algorithms, disproportionate recommendations of books by US authors. These results do not diagnose a current commercial AI service or prove that any particular title was promoted unfairly.

For context, a 2022 study by Daniil, Cuper, Liem, van Ossenbruggen, and Hollink found that American authors wrote 36% of unique books in the full Book-Crossing dataset, compared with 68.5% after the study’s filtering cutoffs. Ratings for books by US authors made up 55.3% of ratings in the full dataset and 74.4% of ratings in the filtered Fairbook ratings. These are dataset-composition figures, not measurements of how often a current AI product recommends US authors. The study also notes that popularity is not inherently harmful in every context. See the 2022 study.

What Goodreads review disclosures can—and cannot—tell you

A 2025 study examined 7,833,389 English-language Goodreads reviews of at least 50 characters after preprocessing. Its authors searched for terms reviewers used to disclose incentives, including “ARC,” commonly used for an advance reader copy. Across two samples, their keyword approach averaged 77.75% accuracy for identifying manually verified incentivized reviews. Goodreads did not provide an incentive label, so the method found self-disclosed incentives rather than independently verifying every review’s circumstances.

Those figures do not mean that 77.75% of Goodreads reviews are incentivized, nor can a search for disclosure phrases reveal an incentive that a reviewer never mentioned. The study is evidence that some readers disclose incentives in review text—not a way to determine whether a specific AI recommendation or review was paid. See the 2025 Goodreads review study.
