Permissions show what the operating system allows the app to access; they do not prove what the provider stores, reviews, or shares after information reaches its servers. Treat the exercise as a consistency check—not proof of backend behavior.
What the check can—and cannot—tell you
A permission is evidence of capability: for example, whether the operating system allows an app to use the microphone or access location. A privacy claim describes data practices, such as whether conversations are retained, used to improve models, or shared. These are different questions, so neither a permissions screen nor a policy alone establishes the full picture.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) notes that voice assistants usually send recordings to manufacturers’ servers and that wake words can be misrecognized. That general advice does not establish how a particular assistant currently works; check the product’s own controls and policy. FTC: How To Secure Your Voice Assistant and Protect Your Privacy
Audit the assistant in six steps

Capture the exact privacy claim
Write down what the assistant promises: for example, that it does not listen in the background, retain conversations, use chats to improve models, or share data. Save the wording, where you saw it, and the date or app version. Note whether it is an absolute promise or depends on a setting, feature, or account type.

Review the device permissions and recent access
Check permissions relevant to the claim and the features you use: microphone, camera, location, contacts, photos or files, and any other sensitive access. On Android, the Privacy Dashboard can show recent camera, location, and microphone access, while Permission Manager gathers sensitive permissions. Depending on Android version and device, controls may include one-time, while-in-use, or denied access; location may offer approximate or more precise choices. Compare each granted permission with a feature you actually use. A microphone permission may support voice input; by itself, it does not show that the app records continuously. Revoke access you do not need, keeping in mind that a feature may stop working.

Read the app-store data disclosure
On Google Play, review the app’s Data safety section, where available. Android describes it as a disclosure of data an app may access and use. It is information supplied by the developer, not an independent audit, so compare it with the service’s own policy and settings. Android privacy settings and permissions

Inspect the privacy policy and account controls
Search for conversation or recording storage, retention periods, deletion, model improvement or training, human review, sharing with service providers or other parties, and connected accounts. Check the in-app or account settings as well as the policy: controls may let you change whether conversations are saved or used for improvement, or manage linked services.

Question Evidence to check What it establishes Can the app access the microphone? Operating-system permission and recent-access indicator Whether access is allowed and whether recent access is shown; not what happens to audio on a server. Are conversations saved or used to improve models? Privacy policy and account or in-app controls The provider’s stated practices and available controls; not an independent verification of backend behavior. Can another service or account receive information? Connected-account settings and policy disclosures Visible links and declared sharing; not necessarily every technical data flow. For each mismatch, ask whether the permission has a clear purpose in a feature you use, whether a setting contradicts the claim, and whether the relevant disclosure has a date or scope. A denial of microphone access does not settle how the service handles text you type into it.

Reduce access and revisit after changes
Turn off permissions you do not need, disconnect unwanted accounts, and use available retention or deletion controls. Recheck after app updates or policy changes. If you want to report a concrete discrepancy, keep dated notes or screenshots of the claim and the settings you observed.

How to interpret a mismatch
- A permission is granted, but the app says it does not use that data: A grant indicates that the operating system permits access, not that the app is using it continuously. Check recent-access indicators and whether the permission supports a feature you use.
- A permission is denied, but the assistant still handles conversations: Device permissions govern access to device features and data. They do not prevent the service from processing text you submit or settle its retention, review, or sharing practices.
- A marketing claim differs from a policy or setting: Record the exact wording and source. The FTC says companies must honor privacy commitments wherever they are made, including promotional materials, service terms, or marketplaces. Its January 2024 guidance also warns that changing terms or using consumer data for additional purposes without clear and conspicuous notice and affirmative express consent can create legal risk; it is guidance, not a finding about a particular assistant. What regulators are examining
In September 2025, the FTC announced it was issuing orders under Section 6(b) to seven consumer-facing AI chatbot companies, seeking information about representations to users and parents and about collection, handling, use, and sharing of personal information from conversations. Keep a short audit record
For a useful snapshot, record the assistant and app version, device and operating-system version, date, exact privacy claim, relevant permissions and recent access, store disclosure, policy or account setting, and any unresolved question. This makes it easier to tell whether a later change is new and to describe a specific inconsistency. Android’s developer guidance says to request only the minimum permissions a feature needs; that is useful context when asking why an assistant wants a particular permission.
