To check whether an account aggregator (AA) is registered with the Reserve Bank of India, match the company’s exact legal name against RBI’s current list of registered NBFCs and confirm its category is NBFC-Account Aggregator (NBFC-AA). Then check the list’s date and relevant status information, including cancellations. An app name, brand, or appearance in an AA ecosystem directory is not proof of current RBI registration.

How to check an account aggregator’s RBI registration

  1. Get the legal company name. Ask the provider which legal entity operates its AA service. Search for that name, not just the app or brand.
  2. Open RBI’s NBFC information and registered-company lists. Start at the RBI NBFC information page and follow its route to the latest list of registered NBFCs. RBI says its NBFC section also contains lists of rejected, cancelled, and vanishing companies. If the site’s navigation changes, use the RBI site map to locate the NBFC information section.
  3. Find the exact legal name and check the category. The entry should identify the company as an NBFC-AA. A similarly named company or an entry under a different NBFC category is not the same evidence.
  4. Check the list’s date and status information. Use the most current RBI-published list available, note its as-of or publication date, and check relevant cancellation information. A past entry alone does not establish current status.
  5. Resolve any mismatch before sharing information. If the name is absent, the category is unclear, or the legal entity does not match the brand, ask the provider to explain which company operates the service and verify that entity against current RBI information.

RBI’s Master Direction on NBFC-Account Aggregators requires an RBI certificate of registration for a company carrying on AA business. It provides a limited exception for certain entities regulated by another financial-sector regulator that aggregate only information from that sector. RBI’s 2016 press release on Account Aggregators likewise says a company cannot commence or carry on AA business without obtaining a certificate from the Bank.

What counts as convincing evidence?

  • Exact identity: the legal company name in RBI’s record matches the entity the provider says operates the AA service.
  • Relevant category: the record classifies it as NBFC-AA.
  • Current status: the latest available RBI list and relevant status information do not indicate that the registration was cancelled.

RBI’s NBFC information page is the appropriate route for checking its published records. If a provider points to an ecosystem directory or an older list instead, treat that as context—not confirmation of present registration.

Why a brand or ecosystem listing may not answer the question

The AA ecosystem includes more than account aggregators. It also includes financial information providers (FIPs), which hold financial information, and financial information users (FIUs), which may request it. RBI’s FAME consumer education material explains these roles and the information flow under customer consent. A company listed as a FIP or FIU is not, on that fact alone, shown to be an RBI-registered NBFC-AA.

Sahamati’s Account Aggregator framework material can help explain ecosystem roles and terminology, but RBI’s directions and registration information are the authorities to use for regulatory status. Similarly, a brand may differ from the legal company name in the RBI record, which is why the provider should identify the operating entity.

Registration is separate from your consent

Checking registration answers whether the operator appears in RBI’s relevant regulatory records; it does not decide whether you should approve a particular data request. RBI’s FAME material says AAs share information with lending banks and NBFCs only after receiving clear instructions from the customer. Before approving a request, read its stated purpose and scope and decide whether you want that information shared.

How to compare providers

If you are checking more than one provider, compare the evidence rather than relying on brand recognition or a directory entry.

What to compare What to check
Identity Does the provider name the legal company behind the app or service, and does that exact name match RBI’s record?
Regulatory category Does RBI classify the company as NBFC-AA?
Status and date What is the date of the RBI list, and do relevant status records show a cancellation?
Data request What consent scope and data-sharing purpose does the provider request?

RBI registration is a verification point, not a complete ranking of providers or a recommendation to use one.

How to interpret published counts

The Ministry of Finance’s Department of Financial Services reported that RBI had granted certificates to 17 companies as AAs on its framework page, alongside a progress update as of 2026-03-31. The same update reported 179 financial institutions live as FIPs, 989 live as FIUs, more than 2.88 billion financial accounts enabled, and 284.6 million accounts linked; it attributes those progress figures to Sahamati. These are dated ecosystem figures, not confirmation that any particular company is currently registered. Check the named company in RBI’s current records.
