Don’t rely on a box label or serial-number lookup alone. Before buying, match the AirPods’ model numbers and charging case to Apple’s identification guide, inspect the physical item, and—if possible—pair it with an iPhone, iPad, or Mac to check its device information. Treat coverage results as supporting information, then weigh the seller’s proof of purchase and return terms before paying.
Start by confirming the claimed model and case
Ask the seller which AirPods Pro generation is being sold and, for AirPods Pro 2, whether the MagSafe charging case has USB-C or Lightning. Then compare the model number on the earbuds or in the connected device’s settings with Apple’s AirPods identification guide. Apple says the model number can be found in Bluetooth settings or printed on the underside of each AirPod. Check the case against the same guide rather than assuming that a box or listing title describes the item accurately.

These are Apple’s listed model numbers; the guide’s current mapping identifies Pro 3 as introduced in 2025, Pro 2 with USB-C in 2023, Pro 2 with Lightning in 2022, and Pro 1 in 2019. A matching number is a useful consistency check, not proof that the particular earbuds are genuine: a number printed on a counterfeit can copy a real model number.
Check the serial number in multiple places
Apple explains where to find AirPods serial numbers in its serial-number instructions: in Bluetooth settings on a paired iPhone, iPad, or Mac; under the charging-case lid; and on the original packaging. The case and AirPods share a primary serial number. AirPods Pro 1 and Pro 2 also have individual serial numbers printed on each earbud.

Compare the information you can access rather than accepting a serial copied into a listing. A mismatch needs an explanation; a match still does not authenticate the physical product, because serial information can be copied. If pairing is possible, inspect the device information and check that the displayed generation is consistent with the model and case in hand.
Understand what Apple’s coverage lookup can—and cannot—tell you
Apple’s Check Coverage page accepts a serial number and shows associated coverage and benefits. Apple’s support resources describe serial checks in connection with coverage and service; they do not make a coverage result an authenticity certificate for a third-party listing. Use the result as one piece of information, not a pass/fail test of whether the physical AirPods are genuine. Apple’s AirPods Support page links to model, serial-number, and coverage help.

Inspect the item and assess the seller
Look closely at the earbuds and case for damage, poor fit, inconsistent markings, or a model claim that conflicts with the numbers. These are reasons to investigate, not definitive counterfeit tests by themselves. Ask for the original receipt or invoice if available, and check that the seller’s account of the item matches the evidence they provide.
- Prefer Apple or a seller whose authorized status and buyer protections you can verify.
- Confirm the return route and marketplace protection before paying, not after a problem arises.
- Walk away if the seller refuses reasonable checks, cannot explain a model mismatch, or offers no credible remedy.

For an in-person purchase
- Ask which generation is being sold and, for Pro 2, whether the case is USB-C or Lightning.
- Read the model number from the earbuds or connected-device settings and compare it with Apple’s identification guide.
- Inspect the earbuds and case for condition and consistent markings; ask about any mismatch.
- If the seller permits it, pair the AirPods and review device information. Compare the displayed generation with the physical item.
- Compare the primary serial across the case and available device information, and check individual Pro 1 or Pro 2 earbud serials where relevant. You may also review the serial’s coverage result, without treating it as proof of authenticity.
- Review purchase evidence, return terms, and buyer protection before handing over payment.
For an online purchase
Ask for current, unedited photos of the actual earbuds, case, model markings, and purchase evidence. Stock photos and a serial number typed into a listing do not show that the pictured or described item is the one you will receive, and neither authenticates it. Check the seller’s history and the marketplace’s return policy, and make sure there is a workable remedy if the item differs from its description. Prefer Apple or a retailer whose authorized status you can independently verify.
