Check AI-generated work by verifying its individual factual claims against primary or authoritative sources—not by judging how confident or polished it sounds. Inspect cited documents, confirm quotations and figures in context, check that changeable information is current, and spend the most time on claims where an error could cause harm.

How do you fact-check AI-generated information?

Use this workflow before relying on, sharing, submitting, or publishing AI-generated writing. It applies whether the output includes formal citations or makes claims without them.

  1. Break the text into checkable claims. Mark dates, names, numbers, quotations, explanations of cause and effect, legal or technical rules, and statements about what a source says. Split compound sentences when they make multiple claims. The House of Commons Library recommends checking individual facts such as dates, figures, and quotations.
  2. Find evidence independently. Look for the claim in its original or another authoritative source. Depending on the subject, that could be a dataset, legislation, a government department, a regulator, peer-reviewed research, or an institution with relevant expertise. A plausible-sounding answer is not evidence. The University of Nevada, Reno Libraries also advises checking claims against authoritative sources.
  3. Test whether each source supports the exact claim. Search for AI-supplied references directly. Confirm that the cited work exists and that the relevant passage is actually there. Then check whether it supports the wording and scope of the claim; a genuine source can still be misquoted, taken out of context, or attached to an unrelated assertion.
  4. Check quotations and numbers at their origin. Compare quoted wording with the original and read enough surrounding text to preserve its meaning. Trace a statistic to its publisher and publication year; do not treat a number as reliable simply because it appears in the generated answer. OpenAI likewise advises checking quotes and data.
  5. Check whether the information is current. Look at the source date and ask whether the fact may have changed. This is especially important for current events, laws, regulations, product details, prices, schedules, and recent statistics.
  6. Cross-check important claims independently. For a contested or consequential claim, seek another reputable source with its own evidence, rather than a page that merely repeats the same statement.
  7. Match checking effort to the risk. A minor background detail may need less scrutiny than a claim informing a medical, legal, financial, safety, or professional decision. The University of Nevada, Reno recommends taking importance and real-world impact into account when verifying AI output. Where a mistake could materially affect people or decisions, use meaningful human oversight and consult a qualified professional as appropriate.
  8. Record what you could not establish. If reliable evidence is unavailable or credible sources conflict, state the uncertainty and do not present the AI wording as settled fact.

How can you tell if an AI citation is real?

Open the reference or search for the publication, report, or document by name. Check that it exists, locate the relevant passage, and compare that passage with the claim it is meant to support. A citation is a lead to evidence, not proof: it may be nonexistent, inaccurate, or real but irrelevant to the statement. Both the University of Nevada, Reno guidance and OpenAI’s advice on checking ChatGPT output recommend verifying references and their support rather than trusting them at face value.

What makes a source useful for verification?

Choose evidence based on who is in a position to verify the claim. Prefer original material when practical, then look for independent confirmation when the claim matters or is hard to interpret. The House of Commons Library identifies official statistics, primary legislation, government departments, recognized regulators, peer-reviewed research, and its own briefings as examples of reputable sources. The briefing on working with AI and the University of Nevada, Reno’s AI research guide both emphasize checking claims against reliable evidence.

  • Freshness: Is the source current enough for a fact that can change?
  • Stakes: Would an error have consequences serious enough to require qualified human review?

Does confident wording or an AI detector prove the work is accurate?

No. Confident wording does not establish that a claim is true; the relevant question is whether evidence supports it. AI-authorship detection addresses a different question from factual verification. NIST’s AI text detector evaluation program studies generators, systems that assess AI authorship or believability, and prompting strategies as aspects of system behavior—not as a universal truth test for an individual document. NIST’s work on synthetic content also covers provenance, labeling, detection, and auditing as transparency approaches. An authorship score therefore cannot replace checking claims against sources.

Is there a universal accuracy percentage for AI-generated work?

No general-purpose accuracy rate is established for all models, subjects, prompts, and types of output. A percentage is meaningful only when it identifies the system, task, test conditions, metric, and date. NIST describes measurement and evaluation as important to understanding AI performance; its AI Risk Management Framework and Generative AI Profile address trustworthiness risks and practices rather than supplying one accuracy percentage for every use. The Generative AI Profile was published on July 26, 2024.
