The map can help you find options, but it does not tell you what a plan costs or how well it will perform.
1. Search your address on the FCC National Broadband Map

Open the FCC National Broadband Map and enter your complete street address, including the unit number if you live in an apartment or condominium.

If the address does not appear in search results, use the map’s location search and zoom to the point where the building is located. Map location points can represent homes, apartment or condominium buildings, and small-business buildings.

Review the listed providers, connection technologies, and advertised download and upload speeds. These are providers’ reported offerings for the mapped location, not a speed-test result or a guarantee of the speed your household will receive. The FCC explains how to use the map.

2. Confirm service and compare the real cost
Call or contact each provider shown on the map before choosing a plan. Ask the provider to confirm that it can install service at your exact address and, for a multi-unit building, your specific unit. A map listing is a useful lead, not final confirmation of installability.
Ask for the terms that determine what you will actually pay and receive:

The FCC says its map shows availability, not affordability or network performance. Its availability information is provider-submitted, with updates also informed by FCC verification, location-data changes, and public input. Read the FCC’s map guidance and availability-challenge guidance for details.
3. Challenge an availability listing that seems wrong
If a provider listed on the map says it cannot serve your address—or you believe a listed availability claim is inaccurate—you can submit an availability challenge through the map. The FCC accepts challenges from consumers and other stakeholders. Follow the map’s challenge process and provide the address and information requested.

4. Check whether Lifeline can lower your bill
Lifeline is a federal benefit that may help eligible consumers pay for phone or internet service. USAC lists basic support of up to $9.25 per month; eligible residents of Tribal lands may qualify for enhanced support of up to $34.25 per month. These are maximum benefit amounts, not a guarantee that every provider or plan will apply the benefit in the same way. Check USAC’s current Lifeline overview.

Eligibility
USAC says you may qualify if your household income is at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, or if you or someone in your household participates in a qualifying program. Examples include SNAP, Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Federal Public Housing Assistance, and Veterans Pension benefits. USAC’s 2026 income limits vary by household size and geography, including separate amounts for Alaska, Hawaii, and the contiguous states; check the current eligibility table rather than relying on a single national dollar figure. Only one Lifeline benefit is allowed per household.

Apply through the Lifeline National Verifier consumer portal or by mail. USAC explains the process in its National Verifier instructions.

If automated checks cannot verify your eligibility, provide the documentation requested for review.

After you qualify, contact a participating service provider to enroll. Qualification alone does not start a discount or select a plan for you.
USAC’s fixed-broadband minimum service standards include 25 Mbps download, 3 Mbps upload, and a 1,280 GB usage allowance. These standards relate to provider reimbursement under Lifeline; they are not a promise that every eligible customer can purchase a plan with those terms at their address. The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) ended on June 1, 2024, because Congress did not provide additional funding. It is not an open application option. Check current Lifeline eligibility and ask providers about their available plans or offers instead. See USAC’s ACP information page.
Compare offers side by side
Once providers have confirmed service, compare their answers using the same criteria. A low introductory price may not be the lowest-cost option over time if fees are high or the regular rate rises sharply.
