A USB-C plug by itself guarantees none of these.
Check your laptop’s USB-C charging requirements
Start with the laptop’s full model name and generation. Find it in system settings, on the device label or in the manufacturer’s support utility. Then consult the maker’s official support page for that model and verify two things: whether the particular USB-C port accepts power for charging, and what minimum or recommended charger wattage the model requires.
Do not infer charging support from the connector’s shape. USB-C describes the connector, not whether a laptop port accepts charging or which charging capabilities it supports. Manufacturer guidance is model-specific: Apple’s Mac adapter guidance and Microsoft’s Surface Laptop charging requirements provide examples.
Match the charger’s protocol and available output
Read the charger’s label or its published output specifications. Check the output available from the USB-C port you will actually use—not just the adapter’s headline maximum. If the laptop maker specifies USB Power Delivery (USB PD), make sure the charger supports USB PD and can provide at least the wattage the model requires. USB PD lets a device request power that the source can provide; it does not make an underpowered source deliver more than it supports. See the USB-IF overview of USB Power Delivery.

USB PD Revision 3.1 describes fixed-voltage options enabling power levels up to 240W. That is a specification capability, not a promise that every laptop, charger or cable supports 240W. Match all three components to the laptop’s requirements.
Check the USB-C cable’s power rating
The cable is a separate part of the check. A USB-C plug does not show how much power its cable can carry. Confirm the cable’s stated power capability and follow the cable and laptop makers’ specifications for your intended wattage. USB-IF’s compliance guidance describes 60W and 240W power markings for USB-C to USB-C cable categories in its program. Compare the requirement with what you have
| What to verify | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Laptop and port | The official documentation for your exact model says the USB-C port accepts charging. |
| Charging protocol | The charger supports the protocol the laptop maker specifies, such as USB Power Delivery. |
| Charger output | The USB-C port you will use can supply at least the model’s stated minimum or recommended wattage. |
| Cable | The cable is rated for the intended power. |
| Charging goal | You have decided whether meeting the minimum is enough or you want the maker’s recommended fast-charging behavior. |
There is no single wattage that is right for every laptop. For example, Microsoft’s current charging table lists a 45W minimum and a 60W fast-charge recommendation for the Surface Laptop 13-inch. Those figures apply to that named model, not to all Surface devices or laptops.
Can you use a lower-wattage USB-C charger?
It depends on the laptop. A lower-power charger may charge slowly, may not charge the device at all, or may not enable fast charging. Microsoft warns: “If you connect a lower-wattage charger or a USB-A charger with a USB-A-to-USB-C cable, your device may charge slowly or not at all.” Apple says a USB-C charging Mac can use a USB-C power adapter or display that supports USB Power Delivery, and recommends at least the minimum wattage specified for the Mac model for the best charging experience.

Use your manufacturer’s model-specific minimum as the reference. If the charger falls below it, do not assume charging will work just because the connectors fit.

Once the specifications match, connect the charger and check the laptop’s charging status or manufacturer utility. Treat this as a final behavior check: a status message or observed charge rate does not replace checking the model’s official requirements.

On a Mac
Apple says you can view the connected adapter’s wattage by holding Option, opening the Apple menu, choosing System Information, then selecting Power and checking AC Charger Information. Apple also documents that an underpowered setup can be identified as “Slow Charger.” See Apple’s Mac charging instructions.
On other laptops
Check the device maker’s support instructions or charging utility for that model. Status labels and ways to inspect charger behavior differ by manufacturer.
