To check whether a TV will fit, measure the usable wall or furniture space, compare it with the exact model’s physical dimensions, then verify viewing distance, mount compatibility and wall conditions. A TV’s advertised diagonal size is not its width or height, and a mount’s screen-size rating alone does not confirm that it can safely hold your set.
1. Measure the space where the TV will go
Measure the usable width and height of the wall or furniture, accounting for trim, shelves, doors, windows and anything else that could obstruct the screen. If wall-mounting, compare the available area with the TV’s dimensions without its stand. If placing it on a console, check the dimensions with the stand and make sure the stand’s footprint fits on the furniture. Follow the TV maker’s instructions for clearance and ventilation.
Look up the full model number in the TV’s manual or official specifications. Record its width, height and depth, both with and without the stand if those figures are listed. Diagonal screen size is only a description of the screen measurement; it does not tell you how much wall or furniture the complete set occupies.
For perspective, LG’s USA guide gives these example dimensions, width × height: a 55-inch TV is 48.5 × 28 inches, a 65-inch TV is 57 × 32.5 inches, and a 75-inch TV is 66 × 37.5 inches. These are examples, not substitutes for checking the exact model. See LG’s TV measuring guide.

Resolution, the type of content you watch, eyesight, seating arrangement and how immersive you want the picture to feel can all affect your preferred distance. If possible, use a taped outline or view sets at a similar distance before deciding.
3. Confirm that the TV and mount are compatible
Check the TV’s official specifications or manual for its weight without the stand and its VESA mounting pattern. VESA is the horizontal and vertical distance between the centers of the mounting holes, measured in millimeters. If the pattern is not listed, measure the hole spacing directly; do not infer it from screen size.

Compare those TV details with the mount’s specifications. Confirm that the mount supports the TV’s VESA pattern, weight and screen-size range, and is approved for the type of wall where it will be installed. A box that lists a compatible screen-size range does not by itself establish that the mount supports the TV’s weight or hole pattern. Consumer Reports identifies 200 × 200, 400 × 400 and 600 × 400 as common VESA patterns, but these are examples rather than a complete list. See Consumer Reports’ mount-selection guide.
Choose a mount style for the room
| Style | Useful when | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed | The screen can face the main seating position without adjustment. | Limited space behind the TV can make rear ports difficult to reach; connect cables before hanging if needed. |
| Tilting | You need to angle the screen up or down. | Confirm that the permitted tilt addresses your intended viewing angle. |
| Full-motion or articulating | Seating positions vary or you want the TV to swivel or extend. | Check arm extension, clearance, wall position, TV weight and the movement the mount is rated to support. |
No mount style is best for every room. Base the choice on seating position, screen height, viewing angle and whether the ports will remain accessible.

4. Check the wall, height and cable access
Identify the wall construction before buying or installing the mount. For conventional drywall over wood studs, Consumer Reports recommends fastening the mount to studs for a secure installation. Use the mount instructions to determine the required stud count, bolt locations and fasteners. Do not rely on drywall anchors unless the mount maker explicitly approves the exact installation and load. Plaster, concrete, brick and unusual framing may require different hardware, tools or expertise.
Mock up the screen position with tape and check it from your normal seats before drilling. Consider seated and standing eye level, glare and viewing angle. A tilting or articulating mount may help with a high placement, but it does not guarantee that a high-mounted screen will be comfortable to watch. For masonry, uncertain framing or an above-fireplace installation, consult the mount manufacturer or a professional installer.

Plan the power and cable route before hanging the TV. Check whether HDMI and USB ports are on the side or rear, and whether cables and connected devices will fit behind the set. Slim fixed mounts can make rear ports hard to reach, so connect cables first if access will be restricted. Follow the product instructions, and get help lifting a large TV. Consumer Reports’ step-by-step wall-mounting guide describes useful installation tools and safety considerations.
