A Switch 2 upgrade pack is worth buying when its specific improvements matter to you and the price—or access included with your membership—makes sense. First confirm you own the matching Switch game, then check that game’s upgrade listing for its features and effective cost. Upgrade packs differ by title, so another game’s price or feature list is not a reliable guide.
What a Switch 2 upgrade pack includes
A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition bundles the original Switch game with its upgrade pack. The pack itself upgrades an original Switch game you already own, whether as a physical or digital copy; it does not replace the base game. Nintendo says the original game remains playable on Switch, while the Switch 2 Edition features are exclusive to Switch 2. See Nintendo’s upgrade instructions and availability details.
Not every Switch game has a pack, and the contents and price depend on the title. Check the official listing for the exact game rather than assuming every pack includes the same kind of upgrade.
How to decide if the price is worth it
- Confirm the game and ownership. Find the upgrade-pack listing for the exact title and verify that you own its original Switch game. Nintendo makes packs available only for select games.
- Check the effective price. Look at the game-specific Nintendo listing and check whether an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership includes that particular pack. Membership access does not apply to every pack.
- Identify the features you would use. Separate visual or performance changes, such as resolution and frame rate, from title-specific additions such as new controls, modes, multiplayer features, or companion-app functions.
- Compare the right purchase options. If you own the original game, weigh the pack’s cost against the features you expect to use. If you do not own it, compare buying the base game and pack separately with the physical Switch 2 Edition, which includes both the Switch game and upgrade pack.
For example, Nintendo’s US support page lists the Tears of the Kingdom upgrade pack at $9.99 USD and says active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can download it at no additional charge. That is a title-specific US listing, not a general price for Switch 2 upgrade packs. The Nintendo Store listing also states that the original game is required to use the pack.

What different games’ upgrade packs can add
The listed features vary enough that the value depends on how you play. Nintendo’s store pages provide concrete examples:
- Subnautica: The pack is free to owners of the Switch game; its listing describes enhanced resolution, a higher frame rate, and Joy-Con 2 mouse controls.
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons: Its listing includes enhanced resolution, mouse controls, a microphone-enabled megaphone, and expanded online-play features.
- Card-en-Ciel: Its listing describes increased frame rates, a 4K mode, and mouse support.
- Hollow Knight: Its listing describes higher resolution, improved frame rates, and additional effects.
These are advertised features, not a cross-game independent performance comparison. The official pages establish what Nintendo or the publisher says each pack includes; they do not, by themselves, show how noticeable an improvement will be in your setup.

If you do not own the Switch game
A pack is not a standalone copy of the game. Compare the total cost of obtaining the original Switch game and the pack with the price of a bundled Switch 2 Edition. Nintendo says physical Switch 2 Edition game cards include the Switch game and its upgrade pack; its Switch 2 FAQ explains physical-card contents and compatibility. Compare the actual options available to you before buying, since availability and prices can vary by title and region.
