Start with your router: identify the coffee maker in its connected-device list, then check any device-level connection history or traffic view. If that does not show enough, capture traffic at a router or gateway the maker’s data actually passes through and compare its activity across normal states. An unfamiliar destination is a reason to investigate—not, by itself, evidence that the maker is compromised.

What you can—and cannot—see

A router dashboard may show which device connected, when it connected, how much data it sent or received, and sometimes the destination domains or addresses. A packet capture can provide more detail about timestamps, destination IP addresses, ports, and data volumes. Neither view necessarily explains why a connection occurred.

When the maker’s app traffic is encrypted, recording packets generally does not reveal the messages’ contents. Cloud services, content-delivery networks, software updates, time synchronization, and app features can all produce endpoints that are unfamiliar. There is no known-good endpoint list established here for coffee makers generally; what is expected depends on the exact model, firmware, and enabled features.

Identify the coffee maker on your router

  1. Open the router’s app or administration page. Look for a section labeled connected devices, wireless clients, or DHCP clients. Menu names and available information vary by router, firmware, and region.
  2. Record the likely device entry. Note its displayed name, IP address, and MAC address if available. A maker may appear under a generic name rather than its brand.
  3. Confirm the identity if needed. Briefly unplug the coffee maker and see which entry disappears, then reconnect it. This helps distinguish it from other devices with vague or similar labels.

The FTC recommends using the router interface’s device lists to identify devices on a home network. See How To Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network and Securing Your Internet-Connected Devices at Home.

Build a baseline across normal use

One snapshot can miss background connections or make ordinary activity look unusual. Record what the router shows over time and compare different operating conditions. NIST’s IoT characterization methodology recommends documenting a device’s network behavior across relevant use cases and conditions; the coffee-maker states below are practical examples, not a published profile for any particular model. NIST published the final report, NIST IR 8349, on August 28, 2025.

  • Idle or in standby
  • Brewing
  • Controlled through the maker’s app
  • During initial setup
  • During a firmware or app-related update, when one occurs

For each observation, note connection times, destinations or domain names if shown, and approximate upload and download volumes. Repeat at different times if activity appears intermittent. Also record the router model and firmware, coffee-maker model and firmware, the date, and which app or remote features were enabled. NIST explains its approach to capturing and documenting the range of IoT network behavior in NIST IR 8349.

Use a packet capture if router history is not enough

A dashboard and a packet capture offer different levels of detail. If the router does not provide useful per-device history, the next step is a capture at a point through which the maker’s traffic actually passes. NIST says capturing on a gateway, router, or switch is ideal when the equipment has enough resources. Its report describes a home setup using a router with tcpdump capability and external storage, with a Linux or macOS computer for analysis; this is a methodology example, not a purchase recommendation. See NIST IR 8349.

A packet analyzer can help summarize DNS lookups, destination IPs, ports, timestamps, and byte counts, but it will not automatically identify an endpoint’s purpose or expose encrypted application messages. A Wi-Fi adapter in monitor mode is another possible capture method, though visibility and setup depend on the network and hardware.

Captures can reveal sensitive household activity. Store them carefully, and redact private details before sharing. Do not post screenshots that expose your home network’s public IP address, MAC addresses, or an unredacted capture.

Decide whether a connection is actually unexpected

Compare unfamiliar activity with the exact maker’s documentation, app functions, and manufacturer support information. A new destination could be related to an update, cloud service, time synchronization, or a feature you just used. A repeated connection to an unrelated destination, a large unexplained upload, or activity while remote features are disabled can justify closer investigation, but none proves compromise on its own.

NIST’s guidance is to characterize a device’s communication requirements before applying network controls. Its materials do not establish a universal expected-traffic profile or a MUD profile for any particular coffee maker. Verify an unfamiliar destination with the manufacturer before blocking it.

Choose a visibility method that fits your router

Option What to check Trade-off
Router device list Can you identify the maker by device entry, IP address, or MAC address? Useful for confirming the device is connected, but may show little or no traffic history.
Router traffic or parental-control view Does it show activity per device, destinations, or connection history? Can be easier than a packet capture, but the detail and retention period depend on the router.
Router or gateway packet capture Can the router or gateway capture traffic that passes through it, and can you analyze or export the capture? Provides more network metadata, but may require technical setup and careful handling of sensitive data. NIST’s tcpdump-capable router is an example, not an endorsement.
Separate Wi-Fi capture setup Can your adapter and network capture the maker’s wireless traffic? Visibility and setup depend on the hardware and network configuration.

Before choosing a method, check whether it identifies traffic by device rather than only reporting household totals, retains useful history, allows local analysis, and offers controls that can isolate the maker without disrupting other devices.

Reduce exposure without breaking useful features

  • Keep router and coffee-maker firmware current, and use unique administrator credentials for the router.
  • Use a guest or IoT network if your router supports one, and consider limiting the maker’s access to other devices on your local network.
  • If you test a blocking or isolation rule, change one rule at a time. Verify that brewing, app control, scheduling, and updates still work before adding another restriction.

The FTC also recommends using Wi-Fi encryption and keeping router software updated in its guidance on securing internet-connected devices at home. For more granular controls, NIST describes Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD) as a way to specify communications a device needs for its intended function, allowing supported networks to permit required traffic and deny other communications. Support depends on the device and network; do not assume a particular coffee maker supports MUD. See the NIST MUD practice guide.
