Start with Pokémon’s official Product Gallery to compare a product’s name and packaging, then use the official card database to check a card’s identity and set details. These checks can confirm that a product or card design appears in Pokémon’s references, but they do not authenticate the specific physical item in your hand. For a suspect card, Pokémon also recommends a bright-light check; if the signs conflict or leave you unsure, ask a trading-card specialist to evaluate it.
How do I check whether a Pokémon TCG product is official?
- Look up the product in Pokémon’s Product Gallery. Browse the relevant year’s gallery and compare the exact product name, packaging, and product type. For example, Pokémon has year-indexed galleries for 2024 and 2013. Pokémon Support recommends learning what official products look like because counterfeit products may have packaging that differs from the real thing. A close match is a useful reference check, not proof that a particular sealed item is genuine.
- Compare the expected contents, if Pokémon has published them. Check an official product announcement or listing for the contents of that specific product, and compare them with what is claimed or visible. Don’t assume every product of the same broad type has identical contents.
- Check the cards included in the product. Use Pokémon’s official TCG card database to search card names and compare details such as rarity and expansion. That checks whether the design and details are listed; it does not verify that the physical card is authentic.
- Consider the seller and price as context. Treat a price dramatically below the suggested retail price as a serious warning sign, not standalone proof. Pokémon Support says the highest reported instances of counterfeit sales it receives originate from flea markets; that does not mean every flea-market item is counterfeit.
For example, The Pokémon Company International’s June 30, 2026 30th Celebration Product Showcase lists contents for particular products: the standard Elite Trainer Box is described as having nine booster packs, while the Pokémon Center version is described as having 11, plus a Pokémon Center-logo promo. Those are specifications for those versions, not a rule for all Elite Trainer Boxes. The announcement gives release dates, but an announcement alone does not establish current stock or availability; check the official product information for timing.
How do I check whether a Pokémon card is real?
Match its identity and expansion details
Search the card name in the official Pokémon TCG database. Pokémon says the expansion set can be identified by the icon at the bottom-right of the card, and the database supports searches by card name, rarity, and expansion. Compare the listed details with the card. A matching entry establishes that Pokémon lists that card design and information; it does not establish that the physical copy is genuine.
Try Pokémon’s bright-light check
Hold a suspected counterfeit card up to a bright light and see whether it is unusually easy to see through. Pokémon Support says: “Counterfeit cards are often easy to see through if you hold them up to a bright light, so this is a good way to identify a fake.” This is a practical warning check, not a laboratory test or a guarantee: the guidance does not say that every counterfeit will be detected this way.

What should I do if the checks disagree?
Compare the signals together rather than treating any one as a verdict. The official sources do not provide a validated scoring system for deciding whether a particular card or sealed product is counterfeit.
| What to compare | What it can tell you | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Exact product or card name and set | Whether the name and card details match an official listing or database entry. | Whether the physical item is authentic. |
| Packaging and expected contents | Whether the product’s appearance and stated contents match an official gallery image or product announcement. | Whether a sealed item that looks right is genuine. |
| Card appearance under bright light | Whether the card shows a warning sign Pokémon identifies for suspected counterfeits. | A conclusive authentication result. |
| Seller and price context | Whether circumstances warrant extra caution, particularly with a pack priced dramatically below suggested retail. | Proof that a specific sale or seller’s item is counterfeit. |
If you remain uncertain, Pokémon Support suggests asking a local shop specializing in trading cards to evaluate the potentially counterfeit card. This is a route to an additional opinion, not a promise of formal authentication or certification. Pokémon’s guidance does not describe a formal certification process for verifying an individual physical card or sealed product.

What do the official checks actually verify?
A gallery image or database match is a reference check: it helps establish that Pokémon lists a product or card design and lets you compare its stated details. It does not prove that the item in hand came from an official release. Bright-light inspection and seller context can raise or lower concern, but neither is presented by Pokémon as conclusive. Pokémon Support’s counterfeit guidance was updated May 26, 2026; its warnings are practical guidance, not a quantified counterfeit rate or a formal authentication protocol.
