Look for “Online play required” or “Persistent internet connection required.” For a physical PS4 game, check its package too: a disc can still be online-only. Check any PlayStation Plus requirement separately; it usually describes access to online play, not whether the entire game needs a connection.
Check the exact game listing or package
- Identify the version. Note the game title, whether it is for PS4 or PS5, and the edition. If you have a disc, use the package for that copy and region.
- Open the matching PlayStation Store page. Choose the correct platform and region, then inspect the online-feature labels and product information for connection requirements.
- Look for explicit wording. “Online play required” indicates that online play is required. “Persistent internet connection required” explicitly indicates an ongoing connection requirement.
- Check PlayStation Plus separately. Note whether the listing says “PS Plus required for online play.” This is about the subscription requirement for online play, not a synonym for a persistent internet connection.
- Confirm unclear cases with the publisher. Check its official product information or support page for the exact edition if the Store listing and package do not explain offline play clearly.

Understand what the labels do—and do not—tell you
“Online play required”
This is direct evidence that online play is required. By itself, it does not spell out whether every mode needs a connection or whether the game needs to stay connected outside online play. Check the product information or the publisher’s guidance for those details.
“Persistent internet connection required”
This wording explicitly describes a continuing connection requirement. For example, the US PlayStation Store listing for The Elder Scrolls Online displays both “Online play required” and “PS Plus required for online play,” and its product information says “PERSISTENT INTERNET CONNECTION REQUIRED.” Those labels are separate, game-specific requirements—not a rule for other games. “PS Plus required for online play”
This label concerns the subscription needed for the game’s online mode. It does not, on its own, say that the whole game requires internet at all times. PlayStation directs users to the Store to check whether a game requires Plus for online play; some games do not require a subscription. PlayStation Plus support
Do not assume a disc or single-player mode works offline
A disc is not proof that a game can run without a network connection. PlayStation’s Japanese PS4 support page says that even a disc version designated online-only cannot be played without a network environment, and directs players to check the package or Store listing. Likewise, a single-player mode does not by itself establish that a particular game can be played offline. Check the requirements for the precise version rather than inferring them from the mode name or from a different game.
Separate purchase and download from playing offline
Buying and downloading a digital game requires internet access, but that does not answer whether you can play it offline after it is installed. PlayStation’s PS5 Quick Start Guide explains the internet requirement for purchasing and downloading digital games and separately describes disc installation; it does not say that every disc game works offline or that every downloaded game needs internet after installation. When official information is unclear
Look for a publisher FAQ or support article that names the same platform and edition. If it still does not specify whether the mode you want works offline, treat that as unresolved rather than relying on general console guidance. Requirements can differ by title, edition, platform, and service state.
PlayStation’s 2013 North American PS4 FAQ said the console did not require a persistent connection for offline single-player games, while online multiplayer required internet and PlayStation Plus according to that FAQ. That historical PS4-level statement explains the distinction between console connectivity and a game’s own requirements; it is not a current guarantee for every game or later console generation.
