On Steam, open the game’s store page and check its controller-support label and any details for your specific controller. Full Controller Support means you can download, launch, set up, and play using only a controller; Partial Controller Support means you may need a mouse or keyboard for some steps. For a game you already own, check its Steam library compatibility information too.
Check a game’s controller support on Steam
- Before you buy: Open the game’s Steam store page and find the controller-support label. Check any controller-specific compatibility details against the model you plan to use. - Check what “Full” or “Partial” means: Use the label to judge whether controller-only use matters to you, then look for details about your particular device.
Understand Steam’s Full and Partial labels
Full Controller Support
Steam defines Full Controller Support as being able to download, launch, and play a game using only a controller, without needing a mouse or keyboard for setup or in-game configuration. Steam Support: Controller support
Partial Controller Support
Partial Controller Support means a mouse or keyboard may be needed occasionally—for example, to install or configure the game, use its launcher, enter text, or access optional interface features. It does not necessarily mean you cannot play the game with a controller. Steam Support: Controller support
Check compatibility for your actual controller
A general controller-support label is not a guarantee that every model will work the same way. Steam’s game-level information distinguishes Xbox, DualSense, and DualShock compatibility, and may reflect your recent controller use. Steam Input also supports several controller families, including Steam Controller, PlayStation 3 and 4, Xbox 360 and One, Switch Pro, and DirectInput gamepads. On Windows, Steam says its overlay can hook common gamepad APIs and inject an emulated Xbox controller. That input translation can help a controller work, but it does not establish that a game has controller-friendly menus, setup, or prompts, or qualify it for Full Controller Support. Steam’s Big Picture documentation lists Steam Controller, official Microsoft Xbox controllers, DualShock 4, DualSense, and Switch Pro as supported there; it says third-party controllers often work but are not officially supported. PlayStation controllers on Windows
Check the game’s own compatibility information and the setup guidance for the launcher you use. Microsoft notes that Steam Input or DS4Windows may be needed for full compatibility in some games, while PlayStation says controller support varies by game. Treat an absent or unclear listing as uncertain, not as proof that no controller can work. A controller may still function through an input-mapping configuration, but that does not guarantee reliable gameplay or a controller-only setup. If the store page does not resolve the question, check the game’s compatibility information and the input-layer guidance for your controller and launcher.
