In India, “no-cost EMI” does not necessarily mean the lender has waived interest or that the purchase has no extra charges. Check the specific offer and lender documents, then compare the cash price with your down payment, all instalments, fees and taxes, less only discounts or cashback you are entitled to receive.
What “no-cost EMI” can mean
The phrase may describe who absorbs the interest cost rather than an interest-free loan. In some offers, the lender charges interest and the seller offsets it through a discount or cashback. ICICI Bank describes one such arrangement this way: “Banks charge an interest on all EMIs. However, under a no-cost EMI offer, the total interest payable, is already adjusted in the price of the order.” That describes the offer structure in the bank’s terms, not a universal definition. ICICI Bank’s offer terms provide one example.
Axis Bank’s terms for a Flipkart offer make the distinction explicit: “The discount under No Cost EMI on credit card payment option is being offered exclusively by sellers and does not amount to EMI/interest waiver extended by the bank.” In other words, keep three things separate: the lender’s contractual interest, the seller’s subsidy or discount, and any additional fees or taxes. The Axis Bank/Flipkart terms apply to that offer, not every EMI promotion.

Check the offer before accepting it
- Save the price breakdown. Record the cash price, EMI checkout price, instant discount, amount financed, down payment and selected tenure. Check whether a discount has already reduced the displayed price or whether the benefit is a later cashback.
- Read the offer conditions. Look for eligible card or loan type, product, tenure and minimum purchase; the interest or subvention amount; discount or cashback amount and timing; and terms for returns, cancellation and early closure. These details can vary by issuer, merchant, tenure and offer date.
- Read the lender’s documents. Check the Key Fact Statement (KFS) and loan agreement when supplied and applicable, along with the issuer’s current schedule of charges. Note the principal, annualised rate or APR where disclosed, instalment amount and count, processing or documentation fees, taxes, and late-payment, cancellation or foreclosure charges.
- Calculate the total outlay. Use: down payment + all instalments + separately billed fees and taxes − instant discount − confirmed cashback. Compare the result with the cash purchase price. Treat delayed or conditional cashback separately until the written terms establish that it applies to your transaction.
- Check the first statement. Match the booked purchase and tenure, instalment, interest, fee and tax lines against the offer and lender documents. If cashback is promised, note the stated credit window. ICICI’s cited debit-card EMI terms say its merchant-provided no-cost benefit may take up to 90 days; that timing is specific to the described facility, not a general rule. ICICI debit-card EMI terms.
What documents and disclosures should you look for?
RBI fair-practices guidance says lenders should disclose fees and charges, inform customers of the all-in cost and put agreed terms in writing. It also says undisclosed additional loan charges are unfair practice and that borrowers should receive copies of loan documents and enclosures. RBI’s guidance states: “Further, the banks must inform ‘all-in-cost’ to the customer to enable him to compare the rates charges with other sources of finance.” RBI fair-practices guidance.

For covered personal loans, RBI says APR, as applicable, should be disclosed in the KFS and agreement. Whether a particular card or merchant EMI facility falls under a specific KFS requirement depends on the product. RBI’s KFS FAQ explains the APR disclosure expectation. In a digital-lending context, RBI has also discussed KFS/APR and charges not listed in the KFS; that guidance should not be treated as establishing the rules for every card EMI. RBI digital-lending speech.
How to read fees and GST
Do not infer that an offer is fee-free from its “no-cost” label. An ICICI offer document gives an example of an EMI processing fee of 2.99%, capped at ₹299, plus GST. That is an offer-specific figure, not a standard charge across lenders or transactions. Axis/Flipkart terms also refer to processing or cancellation charges under bank policies; check the terms that apply to your own transaction.

GST treatment depends on what a charge represents. CBIC says loan, advance or deposit services are exempt to the extent consideration is interest or discount, while charges collected over and above interest or discount are taxable consideration. It separately notes that the cited interest exemption excludes interest on outstanding credit-card balances. These distinctions do not establish a universal GST rate or treatment for every EMI line item; the product and charge classification matter. CBIC’s sectoral FAQ.
What to do if the numbers do not match
- Keep the checkout breakdown, offer terms, tenure confirmation, KFS or agreement if supplied, schedule of charges, and statements.
- Write to the issuer or merchant responsible for the charge and request an itemised explanation of the principal, interest, fee, tax or missing benefit. Keep the response with your records.
- Compare the explanation with the written offer. RBI guidance says undisclosed additional loan charges are unfair and supports asking for all-in cost and copies of the loan documents. The complaint and escalation route depends on the provider and product.
Compare EMI with paying cash
An instalment amount alone does not show the full cost. Compare total rupees paid after fees, taxes and guaranteed discounts, and consider cashback timing, monthly cash flow, tenure, and charges for returns, missed payments or early closure. RBI consumer guidance discusses comparing loan amount, term, rates, APR and fees in a home-loan context; those considerations can inform a cost comparison, but home-loan-specific provisions do not automatically apply to card or merchant EMI.
