Open the stream’s YouTube watch page and check whether YouTube presents it as live. That is the clearest viewer-side clue—but a looping picture, continuous playback, or an active chat does not prove that the broadcast is still live. YouTube’s definitive stream-health information is in the creator-facing Live Control Room, not a viewer status panel.

Check the YouTube watch page first

  1. Open the stream on YouTube. Look for YouTube’s live presentation on the watch page and confirm that the item is identified as a current live stream. YouTube describes live streams as media broadcast in real time and provides a Live area for finding current streams. See Watch live streams – Computer.
  2. Check the channel’s listing if the status is unclear. A stream that has ended may remain available as a replay, which appears as a video. Reload the page or return to the channel’s listing and check whether YouTube still presents the item as live; do not infer current broadcast status from the video continuing to play. See Learn about live streams.

There is no special viewer-side test for detecting whether the picture itself is looping. The same ambience footage can repeat while a broadcast remains live, or play as a replay after the broadcast ends.

Use Live Chat only as supporting evidence

Live Chat can provide context, but it is not a definitive live-status indicator. Chat is available on YouTube watch pages for streams and Premieres, while some settings can restrict participation; chat also is not available in embedded players. A Premiere can have real-time community interaction while remaining a different format from a live stream. See YouTube’s live-stream viewing guidance and Learn about live streams.

Tell broadcast status apart from playback problems

Broadcast status is whether the creator is still sending the stream. Playback state is what is happening in your player: it may be paused, buffered, delayed, or behind the live edge. Those states can differ, so a frozen image or apparent delay does not by itself show that the broadcast ended.

Check whether you are behind the live point

YouTube DVR can let viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream. If you paused or joined behind the live edge, you may be watching delayed content. YouTube notes that DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. See Turn on DVR on live streams.

Allow for latency, buffering, and network congestion

Latency is the delay between a camera or encoder capturing an event and that event appearing in the stream. YouTube cautions that lower latency can make buffering more likely, and network congestion can delay or interrupt playback even when your connection otherwise seems good. A brief freeze may be a playback issue rather than evidence that the stream has stopped. See Understand live streaming latency and Troubleshoot streaming & video issues – Computer.
