Before buying a used LEGO set, ask for its set number and compare the seller’s actual pieces with a set-specific inventory. Check each part’s identity, color, variant, and quantity—not just the total piece count. Also agree on what “complete” means for the sale: figures, accessories, stickers, instructions, alternate models, the box, and extra parts may be treated differently.
1. Identify the exact set
Ask the seller for the set number if it is not visible in the listing. LEGO uses set numbers to help customers find building instructions and replacement pieces through its building instructions and service pages. A set number gives you a specific reference; a product name or a photo alone may not distinguish similar releases.
2. Find an item-level inventory
Use the set’s instructions and a parts inventory to establish what should be included. BrickLink’s inventory guidance describes ways to check a set’s contents and cautions that a set-box picture is the least reliable reference. When available, instructions and a parts list provide a stronger basis for comparison.
BrickLink Studio can also help: its set details include parts and quantities, and may link to instructions. Its import options distinguish regular parts, minifigure parts, and extra parts, so check which categories the inventory includes. Studio notes that a bill of materials (BOM)—a list of the parts in a model—appears at the end of most LEGO instruction manuals. Digital inventories are comparison aids, not proof of what was physically packed in a particular set: official electronic data can reflect newer parts or versions that have not yet circulated in older physical sets, and color labels can differ between official sources.

3. Ask for evidence of the actual contents
Request current, clear photos of the pieces being sold, rather than relying only on a stock image or a picture of the completed model. Ask the seller to show small elements, minifigures and accessories, and the sticker sheet or applied stickers. If instructions, the box, or extra pieces matter to you, ask for those to be shown too. Photos can help establish what is on offer, but they cannot confirm that pieces hidden from view are included.
4. Compare parts, not just the pile
Work through the inventory and verify each item’s identity, color, variant, and quantity. BrickLink’s inventory workflow recommends its Inventory Comparison Tool when LEGO data is available and explicitly calls for checking variants. Its guidance says an inventory check is complete only after variants are checked and the total quantity—including minifigure parts—matches the box’s printed piece count. Treat that count as a cross-check, not a substitute for matching the individual entries: a wrong part or color can leave the total unchanged.

- Regular parts: Match the listed element and color, and count the required quantity.
- Variants: Check the exact version when pieces look similar; appearance alone may not distinguish them.
- Minifigures and accessories: Check figure components and accessories separately from the main build. A model can look buildable while a figure or a small required element is missing.
- Extra parts: Keep extras separate from the parts needed to build the set. Confirm whether they are included if you care about them.
5. Agree on what “complete” means
Define the contents with the seller before paying. In BrickLink’s used-set guidance, a complete set has the parts needed for all models shown in its instructions, including alternate models. The original box and extra parts are not required under that definition. The guidance also treats instructions and stickers separately: missing instructions must be stated in the description, and original stickers should be included, either still on the sheet or applied.
Do not assume that a marketplace condition label settles these details for every sale. Ask the seller to state whether the deal includes the main build, alternate models, minifigures and accessories, stickers, instructions, extra parts, and original packaging. If you only need the main model, say so; if you want a collector-complete package, make the box and other materials explicit requirements.

6. Decide what to do about missing pieces
If the comparison finds a shortfall, write down the exact part numbers, colors, and quantities. Check whether replacements are available through LEGO’s replacement-pieces service or a parts catalog such as BrickLink. Availability and cost depend on the particular part and can change, so check them at the time of purchase. Compare the likely replacement cost and effort with the seller’s price before deciding whether to buy.

For older or rare sets, a complete digital inventory may not be available. BrickLink’s inventory guidance allows instructions, a set picture, or a parts list as references when a physical set is unavailable; it ranks a set-box picture as the least reliable option. In that situation, be clear about what the available reference can establish, ask for close-up photos, and treat anything the seller cannot verify as uncertain rather than confirmed present.
