A catalogue date is a claim to verify, not necessarily a date written on the cipher or proof of when the whole manuscript was made. Start with the institution’s record, identify exactly what each date refers to, and compare it with independent documentary, textual, material, and provenance evidence. Report a date as certain only when the evidence warrants it.
Start by identifying exactly what the catalogue dates
Open the holding institution’s catalogue record and capture the wording of the date, including ranges and qualifiers such as “circa,” “seems,” or a question mark. Record the shelfmark, relevant folio or page, the catalogue’s revision or access date, and the references the record cites. Check whether the date applies to the entire manuscript, one item within it, a text copied into it, or a collection.
These can be separate timelines:
- Artifact date: the estimated period when the manuscript or cipher was produced.
- Inscribed date: a date written on the object, which may have been added by someone other than its maker.
- Source-text date: the date of an edition or text copied into the manuscript; it can constrain, but is not identical to, the manuscript’s production date.
- Catalogue or finding-aid dates: dates when a description was created, encoded, or revised. Yale’s 2021 manuscript processing manual treats finding-aid dates as distinct fields; a recent catalogue update is not evidence that the artifact itself is recent.
Read the object and its description in context
Inspect headings, dates, signatures, addresses, marginal notes, and seals, using the catalogue’s folio references where possible. Ask who wrote each feature and whether it belongs to the cipher itself or is a later annotation or catalogue description. A date written in a later hand may be useful evidence about the manuscript’s history, but it does not automatically date every text or component in the volume.
Handwriting and ink comparisons can help establish whether entries belong to different stages, but avoid treating a visual impression as a specialist conclusion. Use a reliable institutional description or qualified assessment when making claims about hands, ink, or sequence.

Test the date against independent evidence
Look for evidence from different classes rather than relying on a single clue. Useful lines of inquiry include:
- Provenance and custody: documented owners, transfers, acquisition records, or other evidence that places the object in a particular time or place.
- Related documents: associated correspondence, cipher keys, cleartext, or other records that can be independently dated.
- Script and language: whether the writing and linguistic features are consistent with the proposed period, assessed with appropriate expertise.
- Materials and construction: paper, watermarks, binding, and other physical features. A paper clue may constrain when a sheet could have been made, but does not by itself establish when the cipher was written.
- Textual history: the source, edition, or other identifiable text copied into the manuscript, with care not to confuse the source’s date with the artifact’s date.
For cipher-specific context, check whether related records connect the object to images, transcriptions, possible decipherments, translations, keys, associated cleartext, or related materials. Compare conflicting claims without collapsing them
When dates or provenance accounts disagree, compare what each claim refers to, whether its evidence is contemporary or retrospective, what kind of evidence supports it, and how precisely that evidence can be dated. Then ask whether independent clues converge and whether the source signals uncertainty. A discrepancy is a reason to investigate, not proof by itself that the catalogue is wrong.
Keep provenance and authorship distinct. A documented owner establishes a point in the object’s custody history; it does not establish who wrote or encrypted it. Likewise, an attribution supported only by speculation should not be upgraded into a fact because the provenance is well documented.

What two catalogue examples show
British Library Add MS 10035
The British Library dates the manuscript to the third quarter of the sixteenth century (1550–1574), but also records a title and date added on folio 1v: “The Subtlety of Witches by Ben Ezra Aseph 1657.” The catalogue says the Latin and Middle Dutch text is based on an edition apparently printed between 1547 and 1553. These statements concern different things: the estimated manuscript date, an added inscription, and the date of a source edition. The catalogue also notes a watermark associated with a mid-sixteenth-century French paper maker, a post-1600 binding, a possible origin stated as “? Southern Netherlands,” and acquisition by the British Museum from Thomas Rodd in February 1836. Each detail bears on a different part of the object’s history; the inscribed “1657” alone does not establish that the whole codex was made then. See the British Library catalogue record.
Pay attention to the record’s qualifications: “seems to have been printed” marks an inference, while the question mark marks uncertainty about origin. Its cited 2022 article is a lead to follow, not a replacement for examining the catalogue and underlying evidence.

Yale Beinecke MS 408, the Voynich manuscript
Yale describes Beinecke MS 408 as produced in Central Europe at the end of the fifteenth or during the sixteenth century. The library says scientific testing suggests material consistency with fifteenth-century manuscripts, while the text remains undeciphered. Its provenance account distinguishes Emperor Rudolph II as the first confirmed owner from speculation that Roger Bacon wrote the manuscript and serious doubt about a proposed connection to John Dee. Yale states that the association with Roger Bacon is “pure speculation.” The example shows why a documented owner, a proposed author, and a production date must be treated as separate claims. State what is established, what is an institutional estimate, and what remains a plausible inference or disputed hypothesis. If sources conflict, name the competing claims and their supporting evidence instead of choosing the more attractive date without explanation. A 2025 conference-paper record describes a multidisciplinary approach to unidentified encrypted documents that draws on cleartext, related documents, and catalogue descriptions; its abstract supports that broad method, not detailed claims about case studies. Without a specific manuscript and its evidence, no general method can decide whether that object is misdated.
