To check whether a government payment program is real, verify it through the responsible agency’s independently located official website or contact information—not through a link or number in an unexpected message. Then read that program’s current eligibility and application rules. If you received a government check, inspect it for the issuing agency or payment reason and use the Treasury’s check-verification service. There is no single eligibility rule for all government payments.

Verify the program before responding

  1. Pause. Do not click a link, scan a QR code, call a number, or follow payment instructions supplied only in an unsolicited message. Treat a request for money or sensitive personal information in exchange for a promised benefit or grant as a serious warning sign. USAGov warns that promises of “free money from the government” are often scams: Government grants and loans.
  2. Identify the program and administering agency. Start with USAGov’s Benefit Finder or its benefits information. These resources help you discover programs and find application information; they do not decide whether you personally qualify.
  3. Reach the agency independently. Navigate to the agency’s official website yourself or use contact details listed by USAGov. Ask whether the program and offer are genuine, and confirm the official application route. Do not rely on contact details provided only by the person who contacted you.
  4. Check the actual program rules. Read the administering agency’s current eligibility criteria, application instructions, required documents, and deadline. Do not assume that a payment is automatic, universal, or available just because an advertisement says so.
  5. Report suspected impersonation or ask about a payment through official channels. USAGov directs people to the Federal Trade Commission for government imposter scams and to the relevant agency for payment problems. See its guidance on impersonation scams.

If you received a government check

Look at the check’s memo or issue-type area for the payment reason or authorizing agency. Contact that agency using contact details found independently, and use the Treasury’s Check Verification System to confirm whether the check is legitimate and government-issued. If you cannot identify the issuing agency, USAGov lists the Bureau of the Fiscal Service Call Center, 1-855-868-0151, as a route to ask who authorized it; confirm the current number on the government checks and payments page.

Check verification answers a narrow question about the instrument. It does not establish that you qualify for a separate program or validate every claim made in a message accompanying the check.

How to tell whether you may qualify

Eligibility depends on the named program, the agency administering it, and your circumstances. USAGov’s Benefit Finder can point you toward programs by category or life event, but a result is a lead to investigate—not an individual eligibility determination. USAGov notes that each program has its own eligibility rules, application process, and deadlines: Avoid “free money” from the government scams.

The ID Defender Roller Stamp offers a simple yet effective solution. With a unique wide camouflage pattern, it quickly and easily conceals sensitive data on a variety of surfaces.
  • PRIVACY PROTECTION: useful not only as an ADDRESS BLOCKER or ID POLICE, but also keeps away preying eyes from invoices, authority documents, checks, bank statements and many more.
  • SIMPLE TO USE: Just remove the cover and swipe. The wide swipe makes it easy to cover sensitive information.
  • VERSATILE APPLICATION: Ideal for a variety of documents, including contracts, court documents, shipping labels, tax returns and more.
  • LONG-LASTING INK: The high-quality ink works on both glossy and standard paper and provides up to 330 feet of coverage.
  • Check the jurisdiction. Confirm whether the program is federal, state, territorial, tribal, or local. Some benefits are administered through state or tribal offices, so federal information may direct you to the relevant local agency.
  • Match your circumstances to the stated criteria. Use the program’s own current requirements and gather only the evidence its official instructions request. Without a specific program and applicant details, no general guide can determine personal qualification.
  • Follow the official application route. Confirm where and how to apply, what documents are required, and whether there is a deadline. Keep a record of the application and any official confirmation.
  • Distinguish the payment type. A benefit, grant, loan, refund, and other government payment may have different purposes, rules, and processes; a claim should identify what kind of payment it promises.

Benefits, grants, and loans are not interchangeable

Government benefits may help with food, health care, housing, utilities, and other living costs, but each program has its own rules. Federal grants typically support states and organizations rather than an individual’s personal expenses. Government loans may support education, housing, or business needs, but must be repaid under their terms. USAGov explains these distinctions in its grants and loans guidance and benefits information. A pitch for personal “free money” described as a grant deserves particular scrutiny against the official program description.

Where to take payment problems

If a payment is late, missing, or incorrect, contact the agency or office that issued it rather than replying to an unsolicited message. USAGov’s government checks and payments guidance lists these routes; confirm live contact details on the official page:
