“Free” tells you the offer’s price under its terms—not which edition it grants. To find out whether you’ll get a remaster, check the exact offer’s product name, the official store listing’s edition and included-content details, and any platform or account eligibility rules.
Check the exact product and edition
Start with the offer itself. Note the full product name, storefront, platform, country or region, and claim dates. Follow its link to the official store or publisher page and confirm that it describes the same product. A title containing “Remastered” does not, by itself, tell you whether the offer grants the remastered game, an upgrade, or a higher edition with additional extras.
Look for a product or edition label such as “Base Game,” “Upgrade,” “Deluxe,” or “Complete.” For example, the Epic Games Store listing for Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered labels the product “Base Game” and lists a separate “Deluxe Edition Upgrade.” The distinction is a reason to inspect what the offer actually grants rather than infer it from the game’s title.
Read the included-content list
Open the listing’s “What’s included,” edition comparison, DLC, add-on, or upgrade details. Check whether the remastered game itself is included, then look separately for expansions, DLC, bonus items, and platform-specific extras. Do not assume that “Deluxe” or “Complete” means the same thing across games—or that a free base-game claim includes a separately sold upgrade.

Square Enix’s FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE edition page distinguishes Standard, Deluxe, Twin Pack, and other configurations and lists the game, Episode INTERmission, digital extras, and platform bonuses by edition. Compare the actual items listed for the offer’s edition rather than relying on its name.
Check who qualifies and how the license works
A free upgrade for an existing owner is different from an offer that lets any new claimant get the remaster. Read the terms for words such as “owners,” “upgrade,” “claim,” and “includes,” and confirm which account and platform they refer to. Eligibility can depend on the store where the original game was bought, the platform or version owned, or whether the license is digital or disc-based.

For example, CD PROJEKT RED’s announcement about The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered describes a free upgrade for owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, while giving original Nintendo Switch owners a separate Nintendo Switch 2 route. Those rules apply to that game, not to free offers generally.
The same announcement says the two expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, are included even for people who owned only the base version. CD PROJEKT RED wrote on August 25, 2026: “All current owners of the base game will gain access to the two original expansions – Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine – for free!” That statement concerns The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered; do not use it to infer what another game’s offer includes.

- If you own the Nintendo Switch software in physical format, you can play the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition by downloading only the Upgrade Pack free of charge.
Platform and license format can also affect an upgrade claim. The PlayStation Store listing for Alan Wake Remastered says the product grants digital PS4 and PS5 versions and explains that an existing PS4 owner can get the PS5 digital version at no extra cost subject to a disc requirement. A PS4 disc owner using a disc-free PS5 cannot claim that version at no extra cost. Check the current listing’s conditions against the console and license you actually use.
Use this checklist before claiming
- Record the offer’s full name, store, platform, region, and claim dates.
- Open the official product page linked from the offer and verify its edition or product label.
- Expand the included-content, edition, add-on, and upgrade details; note the game version and each extra that is explicitly listed.
- Read the eligibility terms and match them to your account, original purchase platform, game version, and digital or disc license where relevant.
- If the offer and product page conflict or leave the entitlement unclear, treat it as unresolved and check the store’s or publisher’s current terms or support information before claiming or paying.
Compare editions on the points that affect your claim
When a game has multiple editions or upgrade paths, compare the offer and the other listing by the same details. Do not transfer one game’s eligibility rules to another.
