Use the free FoodSafety.gov Recalls and Outbreaks page to find current U.S. food recall notices, then compare your package with every identifier in the actual notice. A similar brand or product name alone is not enough to establish a match.
Find the current official recall notice

Open FoodSafety.gov’s Recalls and Outbreaks page. It links to current recall and public-health notices from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Listings can change, so consult the live notice rather than relying on an old article, screenshot, or search result.

Select and open the notice for the food you are checking. The notice—not just the listing headline—has the product-specific details and instructions.
FoodSafety.gov describes the federal agencies’ general responsibilities this way: USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) handles meat, poultry, and egg products; FDA handles foods except specified meat and poultry and some egg products. For unusual or borderline categories, use the current agency guidance linked from the notice.

Match every detail on the notice to your package
Read the notice and package side by side. FoodSafety.gov says recalls are “very specific,” and that all information must match for a product to be considered part of a recall. Depending on the notice, check:

Brand and full product name

Package size or type, if specified

Use-by, sell-by, best-by, or freeze-by date
-
Lot number, production code, or UPC, if listed

Establishment or plant number, if listed

Any other identifying details or geographic limits in the notice

Do not assume a product is covered just because the brand or food type looks similar. Conversely, a matching product name is not enough to rule it out if another listed code or date differs. If you cannot find a listed identifier or are uncertain how it applies, use the contact information in the notice or contact the issuing agency before consuming the product.
What to do if your product matches
Do not open or eat the food. Keep it away from other people and animals, and do not donate it or feed it to pets. Follow the notice’s instructions, which may direct you to return it for a refund or dispose of it. FoodSafety.gov notes that harmful bacteria or viruses may not change a food’s appearance, smell, or taste.

If the package has already been opened or the food prepared, follow the notice’s directions for disposal and cleanup. FoodSafety.gov advises discarding potentially germ-contaminated recalled food and cleaning kitchen items and areas that may have contacted it, including cookware, utensils, counters, and refrigerator drawers or shelves. Its example for sanitizing is a solution of 1 tablespoon unscented liquid chlorine bleach in 1 gallon of water after washing with hot soapy water. Use that example only where appropriate: follow the recall notice and the labels for the surface, appliance, and cleaning product. For a recalled product involving an undeclared allergen, FoodSafety.gov advises washing surfaces and utensils that contacted food that was served.
Know whether the notice is a recall or an alert
A recall means a product is being removed because there is reason to believe it may cause illness. A public-health or safety alert communicates a potential risk when a recall cannot yet be recommended—for example, when an outbreak is being investigated but its source has not been identified. Read the specific alert for the risk and any recommended actions; do not treat the word “alert” as proof that your package is either safe or recalled.

If someone may be ill
This guide cannot diagnose an illness or allergic reaction. If someone has possible food-poisoning symptoms or a possible allergic reaction, contact a doctor; call 911 for an emergency. FoodSafety.gov recommends contacting the county or city health department about suspected foodborne illness. Its reporting guidance routes complaints about meat, poultry, and processed egg products to USDA and complaints about other foods to FDA. Use the current agency reporting pages for instructions:
Check the notice again if circumstances change
Recall and outbreak information is live and may be updated. If you kept the package, preserve its label and identifying codes while checking for updates; if you discarded it, use any photo or notes you have. When in doubt about an uncertain match, do not eat the product while you verify it with the issuing agency.
