Check your phone’s operating-system version against Google’s current setup requirements, then confirm your exact phone model and Fitbit product. For most Fitbit devices, Google’s general setup guidance requires Android 11 or later or iOS 16.4 or later—but meeting that minimum does not guarantee every phone will work reliably.
Check your phone’s operating system and model
- Find your phone’s OS version. On an iPhone, open Settings > General > About and check iOS Version. On Android, open Settings > About phone or Settings > About device; the exact label varies by manufacturer.
- Compare it with Google’s current requirements. Google’s general Google Health app setup page lists Android 11 or higher and iOS 16.4 or higher. Check the Google Health app setup requirements page for the current thresholds before setting up or buying a device.
- Check your exact phone model. Google names the Huawei P8 Lite, Huawei P9 Lite, Xiaomi Mi 6, and Huawei P20 Lite as phones that may have compatibility issues, even if they meet the OS minimum. The examples are not necessarily a complete list, so an unlisted model is not a guarantee of trouble-free setup.
The OS minimum is a starting check, not a promise that setup, syncing, or notifications will work on every handset. Phone-specific behavior and software settings can affect those functions.
Confirm which Fitbit app your device needs
Most Fitbit setup follows the general Google Health app requirements above, but Fitbit Ace LTE is an important exception. It uses the separate Fitbit Ace app, which Google says requires Android 11 or newer or iOS 16 or newer. Its setup also has product-specific conditions, including U.S. availability and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for setup or update-related requirements. See Google’s Fitbit Ace LTE information and follow the instructions for that device rather than applying its requirements to other Fitbit products.
App names and requirements can change. Use the app name and OS threshold shown on Google’s current requirements page for the Fitbit you are setting up.

Set up the Fitbit through the app
- Install or open the app specified for your Fitbit product and sign in as prompted.
- Turn on Bluetooth on your phone and allow the app to request any permissions needed for setup.
- Start adding or setting up the Fitbit from inside the app, then follow its on-screen instructions.
Do not try to complete setup from the phone’s Bluetooth settings alone. Google says you must open the Google Health app and follow its setup flow; pairing from the Bluetooth screen is not a substitute. See Google’s Fitbit setup troubleshooting.
If your phone meets the requirements but setup fails
A failed connection does not by itself mean your phone is incompatible. Check the setup basics before drawing that conclusion:

- Update the phone’s operating system and the relevant Fitbit app.
- Make sure Bluetooth is on, and review the app’s requested permissions. On Android, check location access where prompted and whether battery-saving settings restrict the app’s background activity.
- Toggle Bluetooth off and on, then restart the phone and Fitbit before trying setup again.
- If the phone has an old or stale Bluetooth pairing for the Fitbit, forget that pairing and start again from the app’s setup flow.
Use Google’s device-specific guidance for iPhone and iPad setup, using the Fitbit app on Android, and troubleshooting Fitbit updates. Background restrictions can also affect notifications; Google’s Android notification guidance covers relevant settings.

Make a practical compatibility decision
- Likely to meet the basic requirement: Your phone runs the required OS, is not one of Google’s named problem models, and you can use the correct app’s setup flow. This is a good basis to try setup, not a guarantee of every feature.
- Check further before relying on it: Your phone is one of the models Google flags, or you need dependable syncing or notifications. Review the current Google guidance for your exact device and test the functions you depend on.
- Does not meet the stated minimum: Your phone is below the applicable OS threshold. Update it if an update is available; otherwise, Google’s published requirement does not establish support for that phone-app combination.
- Setting up an Ace LTE: Follow the Fitbit Ace app requirements and Ace LTE-specific conditions, not the general app checklist alone.
