What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep the original file unchanged, then check the converted copy in two separate ways: inspect the content and layout people see, and compare the metadata properties that matter. A document that looks right may have lost metadata; matching metadata does not prove that the converted document still looks or works as intended.
Start with an unchanged original
Keep the source file as your baseline and compare it with a copy of the converted output. Avoid editing either file before the check: changes made afterward can obscure whether a difference came from conversion or later work.
Some comparison workflows create a separate report rather than changing the source files. Microsoft Word’s comparison creates a third document by default, and Adobe’s documented Analyzer comparison does not modify the files. Check the behavior of the tool you use, and retain your own untouched originals regardless.
Check the converted content and formatting
Open the output in an application that supports its target format. Review the parts that matter to your use case rather than relying only on a conversion-success message or a quick glance at the first page.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Text, images, charts, and other objects are present and in the right places.
- Fonts, spacing, tables, line wrapping, and page breaks remain usable.
- For spreadsheets, important values and formulas are still present and correct.
- For presentations or other multi-part files, review the relevant slides, sheets, pages, and embedded content.
Format changes can affect appearance even when content is present. Microsoft notes that Word may lose formatting when it saves and opens ODT files, that PDF page breaks may differ from the original, and that saving as plain text removes formatting. These are documented examples, not a prediction for every converter or format version. Check the particular source-and-target pair you used. Microsoft’s Word file-format reference describes these compatibility considerations.
Use a comparison tool suited to the file type
Automated comparison can help identify differences, but tools examine different things. Choose one based on the format and the specific changes you need to find; do not treat a match result as a universal fidelity score.

| Tool | Useful for | How it reports differences | Important scope note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Word Compare | Comparing Word document versions | Creates a separate comparison document; options include text, formatting, and comments. | Its comparison settings can include additional elements such as tables, headers, footnotes, text boxes, fields, and whitespace. Word’s comparison instructions and comparison API documentation describe the feature and settings. |
| LibreOffice Compare Document | Text documents and spreadsheets | Marks inserted and deleted passages in the reviewer’s document. | Use it for the document changes it identifies; it is not a general visual-layout or metadata certificate. See LibreOffice’s Compare Document help. |
| Adobe Acrobat web Analyzer | Comparing selected attributes of two documents in a collection | Shows match/no-match results, links values to source locations, and can export results to CSV. | The cited workflow is for Acrobat’s web Analyzer. Confirm that it is currently available in your product edition before relying on it. See Adobe’s Analyzer instructions. |
In Word, the documented path is Review > Compare; select the original and revised files, then choose the comparison options relevant to your review. LibreOffice’s documented workflow is File > Compare Document. Read the resulting changes rather than assuming the tool checks every visual detail.
Compare metadata separately
Metadata describes or identifies a file. Microsoft Support gives author, title, and subject as examples of document properties, also known as metadata. Microsoft’s properties guidance explains these fields.

For Office files, inspect the properties relevant to your purpose, such as author, title, subject, keywords, or custom properties. Compare the source and output values directly. Do not assume every property applies to every format: metadata support and tag names vary by file type.
ExifTool can display metadata for many file types, but its supported formats and metadata families differ. Use it to inspect relevant tags, not to compare rendered layout. Its format and tag documentation describes supported metadata, and its installation instructions include a Windows download that can be run by drag-and-drop.

Use hidden-data inspection cautiously
Microsoft’s Document Inspector can find hidden content and personal information, but it is designed to inspect and remove data—not to certify that a conversion preserved metadata. Microsoft recommends running it on a copy because removed information may not be recoverable. See Microsoft’s Document Inspector guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Record what you actually verified
If you need an audit trail, note the source and output formats, applications and versions used, the metadata properties checked, and the visual features reviewed. Record exceptions explicitly. For example, you might say that author and title matched, while page breaks changed, rather than claiming that the conversion preserved everything.

A comparison tool’s “match” applies only to the attributes it checks. No single result establishes that every aspect of every file type survived conversion. If the relevant property is not covered by the tool or documentation, treat it as unverified.
