Before buying a discounted phone, get the exact model number or SKU for the unit being shipped and check that specific version against your carrier, SIM needs, software support, and warranty. A familiar phone-family name—or a listing marked “global,” “international,” or “unlocked”—does not establish that the device will work with every carrier or be covered in your country.
1. Identify the exact model and sales region
Ask the seller for the precise model number or SKU, including the country or region version if available. A phone family can include different hardware and configurations across markets, so compare the identifier—not just the family name or product photos—with the manufacturer’s official specifications for that version.
For example, Apple lists cellular capabilities for specific iPhone model numbers and directs buyers to contact their carrier about 5G and LTE support: Apple’s iPhone 16 technical specifications. Google’s Pixel specifications also identify details by model and market, including bands, SIM features, warranty terms, and update support: Google Pixel specifications.
Treat “global,” “international,” and “unlocked” as claims to verify. Ask which exact unit the seller will ship and get the answer in writing. Google’s guidance to buy an unlocked Pixel from the Google Store describes Google’s own purchase channel; it does not verify a third-party listing: Google Pixel carrier guidance.

2. Check compatibility with your carrier
Compare the exact model’s LTE and 5G bands with the requirements published by the carrier you plan to use. Band overlap is a useful first check, not a guarantee: carrier approval, network configuration, software, and support for specific features can affect whether the phone works as expected.
- Find the carrier’s official BYOD or compatibility checker. Use the carrier’s own tool when available, and enter the device’s IMEI if the seller can provide it before purchase.
- Check the manufacturer’s band list for the exact model. Do not substitute a band list for another regional version in the same phone family.
- Ask about important carrier features. Confirm support for eSIM activation, Wi-Fi calling, and carrier-specific 5G if you rely on them.
- Save the result or confirmation. Keep a compatibility-check result or written response from carrier support with your purchase records.
Even a compatible-looking device may not have guaranteed functionality on a carrier. T-Mobile says it does not guarantee the functionality or performance of certain devices that were not sold by T-Mobile or an authorized dealer, or that do not use software sold or updated by T-Mobile: T-Mobile BYOD guidance.

3. Verify the SIM setup for that regional version
Check whether the exact variant has a physical SIM tray, eSIM, or both. That configuration can differ by market within one phone family, and a family-level feature page may not describe the discounted unit.
Apple documents regional differences in iPhone and iPad SIM types, including models that can only be activated with eSIM in some countries and regions: Apple: Learn which type of SIM your iPhone or iPad uses. Google, for example, states that US Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL phones are eSIM-only and do not use physical SIMs: Google Pixel eSIM guidance.

If you need eSIM, verify both that the exact phone variant supports it and that your carrier supports activation for that device. If you already have the phone, Samsung explains that its settings can show the sale code, network code, and carrier ID; it also notes that branding, network configuration, carrier features, and system apps can vary with the SIM or carrier linked to an eSIM: Samsung guidance for checking software and carrier information.
4. Check software support and warranty coverage
Use the manufacturer’s current support information for the exact model to check its operating-system and security-update support. Do not assume support timelines or warranty terms are identical across all regional versions.

For an imported phone, establish who will handle a warranty claim and where coverage applies. Ask the seller or manufacturer to confirm in writing that service is available in your country for the exact unit. A brand name alone does not establish local warranty coverage.

- Get the exact model number or SKU and region version in writing.
- Match it to the manufacturer’s official specifications for that model.
- Check LTE and 5G bands against your intended carrier’s requirements.
- Use the carrier’s IMEI checker when possible and confirm any essential features with the carrier.
- Verify unlocked status rather than relying on a listing badge.
- Confirm physical SIM and eSIM support for the exact variant and carrier.
- Check update support and warranty terms for your country.
- Get written confirmation of who handles warranty claims for imported stock.
