To check whether a crypto payment app can serve you, first identify the legal company behind the app, then verify that company’s current status and permitted services in official regulator registers. Separately confirm that the provider accepts customers resident in your country and supports the feature you intend to use. An app-store listing, accessible website or familiar brand is not proof of either availability or authorization.
How to verify a crypto app before you use it
- Find the legal provider. Open the app’s legal notice, terms, general conditions or account disclosures. Record the exact company name, its registered jurisdiction and any regulator or authorization details. The brand name may differ from the company listed in a regulator’s register. Luxembourg’s financial regulator, the CSSF, advises consumers to check the provider’s official name and authorizations in its legal notice or terms. CSSF guidance.
- Check that your country and intended use are supported. Review the provider’s current country list, terms and onboarding disclosures for your place of residence. Check the relevant regulator for that jurisdiction, too. Availability and authorization are separate questions: a provider may not accept residents of your country, and an app that does accept them may still lack authorization for the service offered. No single official source provides a global country-availability list.
- Search the official register. Use the regulator responsible for the country where the service is offered. Where a regional framework also applies, consult its register as well as the national one. Examples and official register links are listed below.
- Match the entity and the activity. Make sure the entry identifies the same legal company—not merely a similarly named brand, parent company or affiliate. Check that its permissions cover the particular feature you want, such as transfers, payments, exchange or custody. A permission for one activity should not be assumed to cover another; Pakistan’s PVARA, for example, says a licence authorizes only the service categories specified in it.
- Read the status and date. Confirm whether the record shows a current authorization, a registration, an application or preliminary approval. Check the live record close to the time you plan to use the app: statuses can change, and an old screenshot or marketing claim may be out of date.
- Ask the provider if anything does not match. Request its legal entity name, regulator, authorization number and permitted services. Verify the reply directly with the regulator rather than relying on the provider’s wording.
Where to check official registers
| Jurisdiction | What to check | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| European Union | Search the ESMA register of crypto-asset service providers and the relevant national regulator’s register. The CSSF points consumers to ESMA and its own Luxembourg register; Ireland’s Central Bank also directs consumers to ESMA for MiCAR authorization. | The CSSF says the MiCA transition period ended on 1 July 2026; providers may no longer offer crypto-asset services in the EU without CASP authorization. These rules are EU-specific. The Central Bank of Ireland warns that unauthorized providers do not confer MiCAR safeguards. |
| Australia | Search AUSTRAC’s public VASP register. AUSTRAC announced that it became public on 30 June 2026 and says it helps users verify whether a provider is registered. | Describe the result as registration with AUSTRAC, not automatically as a broader prudential or consumer-protection licence. AUSTRAC says registrations can be suspended or cancelled. The register covers specified activities, including exchange, safekeeping and certain transfers. |
| Pakistan | Consult the PVARA licensing information and its public register. PVARA says licensees must publish their legal name, licence number and authorized service categories. | A no-objection certificate (NOC) is preliminary approval, not the subsequent VASP licence. A licence covers the categories stated in it. |
| Dubai | Search VARA’s Public Register and check the listed licensed activities. | The register includes fully licensed firms and entities with in-principle approval (IPA). VARA says an IPA holder cannot begin operations, conduct virtual-asset activity or serve clients until it receives a full VASP licence. VARA regulates Dubai’s mainland and free zones except the Dubai International Financial Centre. |
How to tell a licence from preliminary approval
Register labels matter. A listing or approval may describe a step toward authorization rather than permission to serve customers. In Dubai, VARA explicitly bars IPA holders from starting virtual-asset activity or servicing clients before a full VASP licence. In Pakistan, PVARA distinguishes an NOC from the later VASP licence. In Australia, AUSTRAC’s register is evidence of registration for covered activities; it should not be represented as a different, broader kind of licence.
In the EU, the CSSF states that the MiCA transition period ended on 1 July 2026 and that providers may no longer offer crypto-asset services in the EU without CASP authorization. Check the current entry rather than relying on an older transition-period claim.
Compare providers on more than regulatory status
When choosing between apps, verify each provider independently. A valid entry does not tell you whether the app supports your preferred asset, payment method or withdrawal route, or what fees and limits apply. Check those details in the provider’s current terms and country-specific disclosures.

What authorization does—and does not—tell you
Regulatory status is about a provider and specified activities under a particular framework. It does not establish that every token is safe, that an investment will perform well or that the service is free of operational risk. EU supervisory authorities warn that protections can be limited depending on the crypto-asset and service, and advise consumers to understand the service and secure their wallets.
