Before installing a Chrome extension, compare what it says it does with the permissions and website access it requests, then read its privacy disclosures and linked policy. Check the developer, listing, and reviews too—but treat ratings, badges, and Google’s review process as signals, not proof that an extension is harmless.

Start with the Chrome Web Store listing

Read the extension’s listing rather than relying only on a promotional page urging you to install it. Check whether its name, description, developer identity, and stated function make sense together. Look at its ratings and reviews, and read the privacy information shown on the listing. Google also provides certain verified or featured badges, but these are supporting information, not a safety guarantee. Reviews can change over time, so consider their recency and pattern as well as their overall rating. Google’s guidance on staying safe with Chrome extensions recommends comparing an extension’s stated goals with its requested permissions and published privacy practices.

Translate permission warnings into practical access

A permission warning describes access an extension may have; it is not, by itself, proof that the extension is malicious. The key question is whether that access is reasonably connected to the feature you want.

  • Access to all websites: Google says this may allow an extension to read, request, or modify data on every page you visit.
  • Access to a list of websites: This limits the scope to the specified sites, rather than all websites.
  • Other permissions: Warnings may concern browsing history, tabs and browsing activity, bookmarks, location, or copied data.

Ask whether each permission is necessary for the extension’s stated job and whether the developer explains why. Broad access can have a legitimate purpose for some functions, but it deserves more scrutiny than access limited to a few relevant sites. Chrome’s developer documentation explains how permissions govern access to extension APIs and notes that some can be requested optionally at runtime. Its guidance encourages narrow access and optional permissions where appropriate. See Declare permissions and warn users and Protect user privacy.

Compare privacy disclosures with the policy

Read the privacy disclosures on the Web Store listing and follow the link to the extension’s privacy policy. Check whether both describe data handling clearly and consistently, and whether those claims fit the extension’s stated function. Vague explanations or contradictions are reasons to pause rather than assume the extension is safe.

Chrome’s developer guidance says privacy disclosures should be accurate, up to date, and consistent with the privacy policy. The Web Store’s developer policies also require accurate privacy information and address contradictions with an extension’s policy or behavior. Those rules set expectations for developers; they are not an independent audit confirming how a particular extension handles data. See Chrome Web Store Program Policies and Updated Privacy Policy & Secure Handling Requirements.

Use store review as one layer, not a personal guarantee

Google says the Chrome team reviews extensions before publication and monitors published extensions, including their behavior over time. Extensions judged to pose severe risks may be removed and disabled. That review process adds a safety layer, but Google’s guidance still asks users to examine an extension’s purpose, permissions, privacy practices, and site access. A listing, badge, high rating, or collection of positive reviews cannot certify that an extension is harmless.

Do not use a historical statistic as a current estimate of risk. A Google Research paper examining roughly 100,000 Chrome Web Store submissions from January 2012 through 2015 reported that nearly one in ten in that historical dataset were deemed malicious. That finding describes submissions studied during that period; it does not establish the share of extensions available today that are malicious. No current, independently verified prevalence figure is established by the official user guidance cited here. Read Google’s historical study of malicious extensions in that context.

Compare candidates if you have more than one option

When choosing between extensions that claim to do the same thing, compare the factors that affect how much access you are granting and how well you can assess the developer’s claims.

What to compare What to look for
Permissions and site access Prefer access limited to the sites or data needed for the stated function over broader access, when the extension can meet your needs that way.
Fit with the stated function Check whether each requested permission has a plausible connection to the feature you want.
Privacy information Look for clear disclosures that agree with the linked policy and the extension’s described purpose.
Developer and listing Look for a coherent developer identity, a specific description, and an understandable explanation of the extension’s purpose.
Reviews Consider how recent and consistent the reviews are, rather than relying only on the average rating.

Review extensions you already installed

Safety checks are not only for installation day: listings, reviews, permissions, and extension behavior can change. Google recommends periodically reviewing extensions and their privacy practices, uninstalling extensions you no longer use, comparing their stated goals with their permissions, and limiting the sites they can access. Chrome Safety Check and the Extensions page can also warn about potential risks. Treat those built-in warnings as useful additional signals alongside your own review. Google’s extension safety guidance explains these ongoing checks.
