Use Google Lens and TinEye to search an image, compare their earliest dated matches, then open the pages and verify the context. For a video, search several distinctive frames rather than relying on one thumbnail. These steps can help find the earliest appearance located in the services’ indexes, but cannot prove an absolute first upload or identify the creator by themselves.
How do I find the original source of an image?
- Start with the clearest copy you have. Search the image itself rather than relying on its filename or caption. If possible, use an uncropped version; if the image is a crop or edit, you can search that version too.
- Search with Google Lens. Use Google’s image search to submit an image and review visually similar results and pages that contain it.
- Search with TinEye as a second check. TinEye’s reverse image search can find matching versions and lets you sort by first occurrence, largest image, or most edited version. Different services may surface different copies, so neither search alone should settle the question.
- Record promising results. Note each page’s URL and displayed date. Treat a search service’s date as a lead to investigate, not as the image’s creation date.
- Open the pages and inspect them. Check the publication date, caption, byline, surrounding text, and links to a photographer, agency, original post, or other source. A search result may point to a repost or copy rather than the earliest located source.
- Corroborate the context. Compare the page’s claims with other dated references. Google News Initiative’s photo-verification guidance includes reverse-image search and date filtering as ways to investigate an image’s history.
How to check a video’s earlier appearances
Reverse-search representative still frames from the video. Pause on several clear, distinctive moments, capture those frames, and submit them as image queries to Google Lens and TinEye. A generic scene or platform thumbnail may produce weak or misleading matches; a distinctive frame gives the search services more visual detail to match.
Open any matching pages and check their upload or publication dates and context. Internews’ verification manual describes using a video screenshot or thumbnail for reverse-image search to locate video appearances. A matching frame can lead you to a video page, but a match does not establish that page as the first upload. No match does not show that a video is new or original.
What “first seen” and “first found” dates mean
They describe what a particular search index has located, not necessarily when the image was created, captured, or first published. Google’s About this image panel may provide information about when Google first saw an image or a similar version and pages where it may have appeared earlier. Availability varies by region. TinEye explains that its “first found on” date is tied to when the image was found in its index; it is not proof of the first publication date.

Call a result the “earliest appearance I found” or “earliest dated page located,” and name the service or pages checked. Avoid calling it the image’s definitive origin unless independent evidence supports that conclusion.
How to judge whether an early match is actually the same image
Search tools can return a crop, edited version, or merely similar image. Compare the details that distinguish the visual: subjects, background, framing, visible text, and signs of cropping or retouching. TinEye’s largest-image and most-edited sorting options can help surface different versions, but the page itself still needs inspection.

- Same image, different page: The visual details match, but the page may be a later repost or syndication.
- Edited or cropped version: The composition or details differ. Search both the version you have and, if available, a fuller or less-edited version.
- Similar image only: The subject or scene resembles yours, but distinctive details do not match. Do not treat it as evidence of the same image’s history.
Why a search may not find the earliest appearance
Reverse-image search reports what its index can match. An image may be missing because it is private, deleted, altered, not yet indexed, or difficult for the service to recognize. Search results therefore cannot establish that no earlier appearance exists. Comparing more than one service and inspecting dated pages can strengthen a finding, but does not make the index comprehensive.
Can image metadata prove where a file came from?
No. Metadata can offer a lead, but it may be missing or altered and does not independently prove who created or published a file. Google warns that credit and digital-source metadata can be modified by image-generation and editing tools and may not be accurate. Corroborate metadata with page history and independent context rather than treating it as proof.

Does finding the source mean I can reuse the image?
No. Finding a photographer, agency, stock-photo page, or original post can help you investigate who may control an image, but it does not grant permission to reproduce it. TinEye’s guide to searching for an image also distinguishes finding an image from obtaining reuse permission. Check the applicable license or get permission from the rights holder before using it.
