What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To find what’s using bandwidth, choose the monitor that matches the question: use a computer’s network view to inspect activity on that computer, a phone’s data settings to check cellular use, or your router’s app or admin page to compare devices across the home network. These tools measure different traffic, so a device counter, a cellular total and a router’s internet-traffic report are not necessarily comparable.
Choose the right view for what you want to know
| Question | Where to check | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Which activity is using network bandwidth on my Mac? | Activity Monitor > Network | Data sent and received, including current throughput. |
| Which apps are using my iPhone’s cellular data? | Settings > Cellular | Cellular usage by app, not a complete account of Wi-Fi use. |
| Which devices are using my home internet? | Your router’s app or administration interface | Device or network traffic, if the router supports reporting. |
Windows and Android also offer metered-connection settings to help manage data use, but those controls do not by themselves identify which process or household device is consuming bandwidth.
Check bandwidth on a computer or phone
Mac: see current network activity
- Open Activity Monitor.
- Click Network.
- Inspect the lower section of the window for packets in and out, data received and sent, and data received and sent per second.
For a quick visual indicator, choose View > Dock Icon > Show Network Usage in Activity Monitor. This view reports activity on that Mac, not traffic from every device on your home network. Apple’s Activity Monitor guide describes the available network figures.
iPhone: check cellular use by app
- Open Settings > Cellular.
- Scroll to the app list and check the cellular data amount shown below each app.
- If needed, turn off cellular access for an individual app on the same screen.
System Services has a separate usage view. The figures on this screen are for cellular data, not all Wi-Fi traffic. Apple advises contacting your carrier for the most accurate usage for the current billing period; you can reset the device’s usage statistics at the bottom of the screen. See Apple’s iPhone cellular settings guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Windows: distinguish data controls from live monitoring
To reduce background data use on a connection, open Settings > Network & internet, select the connected Wi-Fi network or Ethernet connection, and turn on Metered connection. This can affect background updates, app downloads and syncing; it is a data-management setting, not a universal live per-process bandwidth display.
If the metered setting is greyed out, Microsoft says the device may be managed by an organization; contact your IT support team. For identifying current activity, use Windows’ available network or data-use tools, or check your router’s device report if you need to compare devices. Microsoft’s metered connections guide explains the setting and its effects.

Android: manage use on metered Wi-Fi
- Connect to the Wi-Fi network you want to manage.
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Internet.
- Tap the connected Wi-Fi network, then choose Network usage > Treat as metered.
This gives you more control over data use on a limited Wi-Fi connection; it is not a universal live per-app bandwidth monitor. Google notes that some steps apply only to Android 12 and later. If the option is missing, check with your device manufacturer. See Google’s Android network settings guide.
Find which devices are using your home internet
Open your router manufacturer’s app or administration interface and look for a section named something like connected devices, traffic statistics or bandwidth monitoring. Menu names and reporting features depend on the router model and software. A router view is the right place to compare household devices, but it may report only traffic routed to the internet rather than every byte exchanged inside your home network.

Google Wifi and Nest Wifi
Google documents per-device upload and download usage in the Google Wifi app, with historical device usage available for up to 30 days. Its network views include real-time, today, 7-day and 30-day totals. Device details cover devices connected over Wi-Fi or directly to a Wifi router or point over Ethernet. Availability and exact screens depend on the supported system and app. See Google’s device and data-usage instructions.
TP-Link Deco and routers
Some compatible TP-Link Deco and router products provide a Traffic Usage feature. TP-Link says the cited internet-statistics module does not include local-network communication, such as file transfers or screen casting. Check the support page or manual for your specific model to confirm whether it offers the feature and what traffic it counts. See TP-Link’s data-usage instructions.

Match the report to the problem
- One computer seems busy: start with that computer’s network view. On Mac, Activity Monitor shows current throughput as well as transferred totals.
- You are concerned about a phone plan: check the phone’s cellular or mobile-data screen. On iPhone, the built-in app breakdown is specifically for cellular use.
- Your home internet is slow or several devices may be involved: check the router’s device report, if available.
- You need an accurate bill-period total: compare the device estimate with your ISP or mobile carrier account. Apple specifically points iPhone users to their carrier for the most accurate current-period cellular usage.
Before comparing numbers, check whether each report covers cellular, Wi-Fi or internet-bound traffic; whether it identifies an app or a device; and whether it shows a current rate, accumulated total or history. A cellular-only counter should not be treated as if it covered the same traffic as an all-network router report. Router statistics may also omit local network transfers, depending on the product.
If your router does not show per-device usage
First check the router’s manual or support page for connected-device usage or traffic monitoring; features vary by model. If you need a whole-home view and your router does not provide one, a router whose documentation explicitly offers per-device usage may be worth considering. Check whether its reporting covers Wi-Fi and Ethernet devices, whether it offers the live or historical view you need, and whether it counts local network traffic.
