To check whether you are registered to vote, use your state’s official election website, reached through USAGov’s voter-registration confirmation page or Can I Vote. The same state or local election office can direct you to the polling-place lookup for your address. Check the location for the specific election, since voting locations and rules depend on your jurisdiction.
How to check whether you are registered
-
Open USAGov’s voter-registration confirmation page or Can I Vote, then select your state.
-
Follow the link to the official state election website and use its registration-status lookup. That state’s election office maintains the applicable record and instructions.
-
Review the status and identifying details shown. Check that your name and residential address are current. Party affiliation may not be displayed in some states.

USAGov describes the lookup as a way to confirm your registration number and whether you are still registered. The available fields and lookup process vary by state.
How to find where to vote
Use the in-person voting-location lookup provided by your state or local election office. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission’s state directory links to state election information, including routes for finding voting locations.

Enter the requested address details and confirm the result for the particular election you plan to vote in. A polling place is tied to your jurisdiction and address, so do not assume a location from an earlier election is still correct. The EAC notes that “Each state and territory administers elections differently”; follow the linked state or local office’s instructions.
What to do if your registration information is wrong or unclear
If you moved or changed your legal name
Use the official update process for your state or territory before its registration deadline. A move across state lines generally requires registering in the new state. Start with Vote.gov’s registration guidance, then follow the destination state’s process and deadline.

If your status is inactive or the lookup cannot resolve your record
Contact your state or local election office for instructions rather than relying on a third-party search result. An inactive record may require extra steps; if the issue is not resolved, you could be asked to cast a provisional ballot. Ask the election office what applies to your situation and how to address it.
Check before your state’s deadline
There is no single nationwide registration deadline or uniform lookup process. Deadlines vary by state and territory: some allow registration on Election Day, while others close registration earlier. Check the deadline and procedure on your state’s election website, and verify your record early enough to correct an error. Vote.gov provides general guidance, but the state or territory’s election office is the authority for its rules.

In its 2024 Election Administration and Voting Survey policy report, the U.S. Election Assistance Commission said that 92.7% of states reported offering a registration-status check on the state election office website, and 94.6% reported offering an online polling-site location check. These are state-reported tool-availability figures from the 2024 survey, not a guarantee that a tool is available for every locality or that a particular interface is unchanged. Use the current state or local election office’s information for your address and election.
