Your effective limit may depend on NPCI’s rules, your bank, the payment app, the transaction category and the account selected for payment.
What “UPI limit” means
A limit can refer to different controls, so first identify which one you need to check:
- A personal spending cap: A lower limit you choose in an app, if that app provides the option. The official materials cited here do not establish that every UPI app offers this control.
- A bank or issuer limit: Your linked bank may set per-transaction or daily caps. Google Pay says limits can vary by bank account and payment method, and publishes a bank-wise table. Check the current UPI issuing bank-wise limits and confirm your own account’s applicable cap with the bank.
- An app or payment-participant limit: PhonePe’s UPI terms say limits may be set by PhonePe, the user, the issuer, other payment participants or law. Paytm also sets out applicable conditions in its UPI terms and conditions.
- An NPCI category ceiling: NPCI rules set upper ceilings for transaction types. A ceiling is not a guarantee that your bank or app will allow a transaction of that amount.
So there is no single effective UPI limit that applies to every app, bank account and payment type. The cap that actually applies can be lower than an NPCI ceiling.
What are the standard UPI transaction limits?
NPCI’s FAQ, accessed in 2026, describes normal UPI transactions as up to ₹1 lakh per transaction. It lists ceilings of up to ₹2 lakh for specified categories—Capital Markets, Collections, Insurance and Foreign Inward Remittances—and up to ₹5 lakh for IPO and Retail Direct Scheme transactions. These are category ceilings; a bank or payment provider may apply a lower limit. See NPCI’s UPI Frequently Asked Questions for its current guidance.

Google Pay’s help pages also describe category-specific limits and bank-wise differences. Because those values are tied to particular banks, payment methods or categories, use the current Standard UPI transaction limits page and bank-wise table for the relevant case rather than treating a listed figure as a universal cap.
How to check whether your app lets you set a lower limit
- Open the UPI app you use. Look in its settings or help area for labels such as payment limit, transaction control or spending limit. This is a place to check, not a guaranteed menu path; labels and available controls differ by app.
- Identify the selected bank account. Check which linked account will fund UPI payments. If you have multiple accounts, do not assume their limits are identical; consult your bank’s applicable cap.
- Check what the control applies to. If the app offers a personal cap, verify whether it is per payment or daily/periodic, and whether it applies to one linked account or multiple accounts. Confirm that it is a user-selected limit rather than a bank, issuer or NPCI ceiling.
- Confirm the setting and its effect. Follow the app’s current official instructions and check whether it asks you to save or authenticate a change. If no such control is available, ask the app provider or bank whether a lower cap can be set for your account.
For example, a normal payment ceiling does not tell you whether your app lets you choose a smaller personal cap. Those are separate questions: the ceiling governs the maximum permitted category amount, while a personal control—if offered—may restrict your own payments further.

How to check UPI payment alerts
Alert options also depend on the app and linked bank; there is no single standard setup path established across providers. Check both sides:
- In the app: Review its notification permissions and settings for payment or transaction alerts. If you cannot find the option, use that provider’s current official help instructions rather than assuming a particular menu sequence.
- With the bank: Check the alert preferences and registered contact details for the bank account linked to UPI. Bank notifications may depend on the contact information registered to that account, including a current mobile number.
When comparing available controls, note whether alerts arrive as in-app push notifications, SMS or bank notifications, and whether the setting covers one account or all linked accounts. Do not assume a payment-app alert replaces the bank’s account alerts.

What to do if a UPI payment fails
- Read the error shown in the app. It may point to a limit or another account-specific problem.
- Check the selected account and applicable cap. Compare the attempted amount and payment category with your bank’s current per-transaction or daily limit.
- Contact the bank if the cause is unclear. Google Pay’s troubleshooting guidance for sending or receiving money recommends checking the bank’s limit and contacting the bank for account-specific issues.
Protect yourself before authorizing a payment
Check the recipient and amount before entering your UPI PIN. NPCI states: “No, once the payment is initiated, it cannot be stopped.” It also advises: “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone.” Never disclose your PIN to someone offering to help with a failed payment or a limit setting.
