Before a hike, confirm the exact route is open with the agency that manages it, check forecasts and hazards for the route’s elevation and timing, and make sure the terrain suits everyone in your group. Recheck close to departure: trail conditions can change after you look them up. Save route information for offline use and share your intended itinerary with someone you trust.

1. Check the managing agency’s current trail status

Start with the official website for the park, forest, or other land manager responsible for your trail. Look for a page labeled current conditions, alerts, trail status, or closures. Search for the exact trail and its access route, then read the notice carefully: a closure may apply to a particular section, entrance, bridge, or connecting route rather than the whole destination. Do not enter a closed area.

For example, Zion National Park’s current conditions page lists trail closures and route-access changes. Great Smoky Mountains National Park’s current conditions page directs visitors to check current trail closures before arriving. Procedures vary by land manager and location; there is no single national trail-closure source established here.

2. Check when the status was updated, then check again

Note the date or time of the status update and whether it covers your planned route. Glacier National Park says its trail-status reports are updated each morning, while also warning that conditions and statuses change frequently. Check the responsible agency’s page again near departure, especially if weather has changed. An old screenshot, saved map, or trip report can help with background planning, but it does not establish that a trail is open today.

3. Match the forecast to the route and hazards

NOAA’s guidance is direct: “Check the forecast before enjoying any outdoor activity.” Review the forecast and active warnings for the area and the hours you expect to be out. A forecast for a nearby town or trailhead may not describe conditions higher on the route. Great Smoky Mountains National Park cautions that “Clear skies in lower areas do not guarantee the same weather at the higher elevations.”

Consider the route’s elevation, exposure, and terrain as well as the trailhead forecast. In winter, if the route enters avalanche terrain, check the local avalanche center’s forecast and alerts in addition to the weather forecast. The National Weather Service explains that regional avalanche centers issue avalanche forecasts and alerts; general weather information alone is not a complete snow-hazard check. See NOAA’s outdoor weather safety guidance and the NWS avalanche safety guidance.

Account for rain, flooding, and drainage terrain

Heavy rain can trigger flooding and debris flows in hilly or mountainous terrain. The National Weather Service advises checking conditions before outdoor activities; flooding can occur even when it is not raining where you are. A clear sky at a trailhead is not proof that an upstream drainage or slot canyon is safe. If water rises, move to higher ground. Review the NWS outdoor flooding safety guidance and take forecast warnings seriously when a route follows a drainage, crosses streams, or enters a canyon.

4. Decide whether the terrain fits your group

Evaluate the route as a combination of distance, elevation gain, terrain, weather, known hazards, and current surface conditions—not just its mileage or a difficulty label. Great Smoky Mountains National Park says trail difficulty varies with mileage, elevation gain, terrain, and weather, and recommends choosing a route suited to the group’s skills. Use the needs of the least experienced or least capable member when deciding whether the plan is appropriate.

Seasonal surfaces can change what a route demands. Mount Rainier National Park notes that snowfields may expose firm glacier ice and crevasses; late-season travel may require technical skills and experience. Read the land manager’s route-specific guidance and be prepared to choose a different route or turn back if actual conditions exceed the group’s abilities. The NPS Great Smoky Mountains hiking safety guidance and Mount Rainier hiking safety guidance offer examples of these considerations.

5. Save navigation details for offline use

Download or capture the official map and route details before leaving service. Glacier National Park says cell coverage is unavailable outside Apgar and St. Mary and advises hikers to take screenshots and plan ahead. A destination-specific paper map can also help if it covers the intended area; bring a compass only if you know how to use it. Mount Rainier recommends carrying a map and compass and knowing how to find the trailhead in a whiteout. Offline navigation supports preparation, but it does not replace current closure and forecast checks.
