To check whether an OTP message actually arrived, distinguish three outcomes: your app accepted the request, the provider reported a delivery status, and a controlled inbox or handset observed the message. Only the last checks receipt at a destination. Build separate CI checks for each level; a passing API call or sample webhook test is not proof that a real OTP reached someone.
What does an OTP delivery check prove?
Use names in your CI results that say exactly what was observed. “Request accepted,” “provider reported delivered,” and “message observed in test inbox” are different assertions, not interchangeable descriptions of success.
| Check | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| API/request validation | Your application made a request and the provider or test endpoint returned a response. | That a real message was sent or reached a destination. Twilio test credentials simulate requests and do not send messages. Twilio explains test credentials. |
| Provider-event monitoring | The provider emitted an event such as processed, delivered, or bounced. | That a person saw, read, or used the message. SendGrid’s test webhook posts example events rather than data from a real send. SendGrid describes its Event Webhook. |
| Controlled destination receipt | A test-controlled mailbox or handset observed the actual message. | That all users, carriers, inbox providers, or regions will receive messages identically. |
How should a CI check be structured?
- Choose and label the assurance level. Run request validation on ordinary builds, provider-event monitoring where event access is configured, and actual receipt checks only against controlled destinations. Do not report a fixture or provider status as recipient receipt.
- Use an isolated test identity and provider configuration. Reserve a controlled phone number and email account, and keep the configuration separate from routine production sends. Twilio recommends using a separate trial project for end-to-end testing; its test credentials are for simulated requests, not live messages. See Twilio’s test-credential guidance.
- Correlate the run without exposing personal data. Record your CI build or run ID alongside your application’s test record and provider request or event IDs. Use an opaque identifier in provider metadata, not a phone number, email address, OTP, or user ID.
- Ingest real provider events. Configure the provider to post event data to an externally reachable endpoint you control. For SendGrid, subscribe to the needed deliverability events and keep processed, delivered, and bounced distinct. Its Event Webhook supplies near-real-time event data. Event Webhook overview.
- Wait for a bounded period and report explicit outcomes. Return separate results for request rejected, provider reported failure, provider reported delivered, and no event observed before timeout. Choose the timeout based on your own CI needs; the cited provider documentation does not prescribe a universal interval.
- Add a receipt assertion only when it is worth the live send. Poll a controlled mailbox or handset for the message and, if needed, extract the code in test code. Keep OTPs and message bodies out of durable logs and use short-lived test accounts.
How can you test OTP email delivery with SendGrid?
Configure the real event path
The SendGrid Event Webhook sends selected events to a URL you provide, which must accept HTTP POST requests from SendGrid. A local development server generally is not reachable from the public internet; a tunnel can help while setting up the endpoint. For actual CI monitoring, use an endpoint you control and correlate incoming events to the test run.
Track deliverability events such as processed, delivered, and bounce separately. Opens and clicks are engagement events, not substitutes for delivery assertions. SendGrid’s Email Activity Feed retains events for up to 30 days according to its documentation; do not assume that window applies to other stores or configurations.

Understand the webhook test button
SendGrid’s “Test Your Integration” request validates that the endpoint can receive its example payload. The documentation states: “The test request will be made up of example events and will not include real data from your mail send.” Treat that as an endpoint/configuration test only; it says nothing about a real OTP delivery.
For an actual send, use an isolated sender setup. Twilio’s Verify email integration guide calls for domain authentication and describes a SendGrid API key with Mail Send and template-read access for that integration. Its email template supports an OTP variable described as a 4–10 digit code. Twilio’s Verify email guide.

- Material: This SRS simulator tester features an insulated, waterproof housing that protects internal components and resists cracking and deformation. The internal metal components offer excellent conductivity, ensuring stable signal transmission and resistance to rust.
- Fault Detection: This repair tool can detect and troubleshoot issues related to fault codes in the SRS system, providing instant feedback. When an anomaly is detected, the device emits a rapid alarm, allowing you to pinpoint the fault without disassembling the assembly.
- Easy Installation: This automotive SRS simulator tester requires no wiring. It features a plug-and-play design, simply disconnect the power source, locate the connector, and plug it in. It remains securely connected even on bumpy roads.
- Wide Applicability: This SRS diagnostic tool is suitable for sedans, SUVs, off-road vehicles, pickup trucks, and most other vehicle models. It can simulate functions such as side curtains or seat belts, ensuring that other components deploy normally in the event of a collision.
- Portable Design: This diagnostic simulator is lightweight and compact, fitting easily into a vehicle's toolbox or glove compartment. Once installed, connections remain secure and free from signal interference, ensuring that surrounding components continue to function normally.
How can you monitor OTP SMS?
Twilio Verify Events documents message status and verification outcome data for supported channels, including SMS. The documentation labels Verify Events as Pilot, so check current availability and maturity for your account before making it a CI dependency. A provider-reported message status remains a provider signal, not proof that the SMS appeared on a handset. Twilio Verify Events documentation.
Twilio Verify supports SMS and email verification channels. For request-level tests, its test credentials can simulate API calls, but they do not send messages; use a separate trial project or other isolated real-send configuration for controlled receipt testing. Twilio Verify API overview.

Why can an OTP API test pass when no message arrives?
An API test may prove only that the application formed a request and received an acceptable response. With Twilio test credentials, messages are simulated and no message is sent. A SendGrid webhook test is similarly synthetic: it delivers example events to test your endpoint, not events generated by a real mail send. Neither should be labeled “delivered” or “received.”
Even with a live send, a provider event reports the provider’s status. To assert that a message appeared at a destination, the test needs a controlled destination that can be checked independently.

- Detects: Magnetic fields, electric fields, and RF (20 MHz–6 GHz; includes most 5G but not experimental millimeter waves). Does not detect radioactivity.
- Displays EMF fluctuations fully: bars update instantly for fast digital signals, while RF and number averages refresh 4 times per second. Other meters over-average or filter field peaks, giving slower, less complete readings.
- Features: 3-axis magnetic, single-axis electric (with standard or weighted frequency responses), and single-axis RF readings (unweighted). Weighted readings emphasize effects on the human body.
- Measures: 4G and 5G cell phones, cell towers, WiFi routers, Bluetooth, AC Powerlines, and Smart Meters. The TF2 responds to RF very fast compared to other meters.
- Includes: Trifield TF2 meter, 9V battery, Quick-start Card, Detailed Instruction Manual, and soft-shell, zipper carry case.
How should you secure and deduplicate event ingestion?
- Validate SendGrid webhook requests using its cryptographic signature mechanism or OAuth 2.0; the methods are independent and can be used together. Event Webhook security options.
- Deduplicate events. SendGrid notes that duplicate events can occur and identifies
sg_event_idfor differentiation. - Keep personal data and secrets out of categories and unique arguments. SendGrid says these fields are treated as “Not PII,” may be visible to its employees, and may be stored long term. Use opaque run identifiers instead.
- Use only sample payloads with public webhook-inspection sites during setup. Do not send real OTP content to generic third-party destinations.
- Keep sending credentials narrowly scoped and authenticate the sending domain for the email integration.
