Check battery status in the app or on the lock itself, then enable any supported alerts in both the app and your phone’s notification settings. There is no universal smart-lock battery screen or low-battery threshold: some models show a percentage, others send an alert without one, and some rely partly on keypad or lock indicators. The steps below cover Schlage, Yale, and Kwikset examples; check your exact model’s manual because app paths and battery requirements vary.
How do I check my smart lock battery?
Start by identifying the lock’s brand and model, then open its companion app and look for the lock’s status, settings, or battery section. If the app does not show a percentage, check the manufacturer’s support page and the lock’s keypad or indicator lights. A missing percentage does not necessarily mean the lock cannot report a low battery.
Schlage Home
In the Schlage Home app, select the Home, then tap the three-dot menu beside the lock to view its battery percentage. If the lock is not associated with a Home, scroll to Unassociated Locks and tap the three-dot menu beside it. Schlage also says an extremely low lock may flash a red battery icon before an action. Yale Home
Battery information depends on the Yale device and feature. Yale’s cited support guidance says the covered Yale Home devices do not show a battery percentage in the app, but do send battery alerts. A separate Yale Battery Insights feature provides an estimated remaining-life figure for supported configurations; the estimate can change as the lock collects data. For Battery Insights, Yale says manual thumbturn operation may not send a battery update; occasional operation through the app helps keep the reported percentage current.
Kwikset

How do I know when my smart lock batteries are low?
Use the alert or indicator specified for your model; percentages are not standardized across brands. The figures below are manufacturer guidance, not universal thresholds.

Do not wait for a lock to stop working after an alert. Kwikset warns that low charge can cause delayed responses or connectivity problems and can impair functions such as auto lock/unlock, activation, calibration, or firmware updates.

How do I turn on low-battery alerts?
First check whether your lock supports app alerts and whether its app offers a setting for them. Also allow notifications for the app in your phone’s system settings; an enabled in-app alert cannot reach you if phone permissions block it.
Schlage predictive notifications
For Schlage Encode, Encode Plus, and Encode Lever locks set up in Schlage Home, tap the three dots on the lock module, then go to Lock Settings > Notification Settings. Turn on Battery Life Notifications and choose a timing option: 8, 6, 4, 2, or 1 week. Schlage says to update the app to the latest version to use predictive notifications. Yale Battery Insights notifications
For Yale configurations that support Battery Insights, the cited help article gives the route Settings > Lock Settings > Battery Notifications, where Low and Critically Low alert types can be enabled or disabled. Yale says delivery depends on both those in-app settings and the phone’s notification permissions. This feature and route may not apply to every Yale lock or app configuration. Yale: Battery Insights
Other models
If your app does not have a battery-notification control, check the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model. Some locks issue alerts automatically rather than offering a configurable threshold or schedule; do not assume the settings on another model apply to yours.

How should I replace smart lock batteries?
- Check the owner’s manual or manufacturer support page for the exact battery size and chemistry required by your lock. Do not assume all smart locks use the same cells.
- Replace the set according to the model’s instructions. For the Yale devices covered by its cited guidance, Yale specifies four new AA alkaline, non-rechargeable batteries. Schlage recommends quality alkaline batteries for its electronic locks and cautions that other battery types may affect alert behavior. Kwikset recommends standard non-rechargeable alkaline batteries for the cited families.
- For the Yale alert procedure cited here, operate the lock three times through Yale Home over Bluetooth or remotely through a Yale Connect Wi-Fi Bridge. Manual thumbturn operation does not clear those notifications. If the low-battery alert remains 24 hours after replacement and app operation, Yale advises contacting support. Why does my smart lock keep saying the battery is low after I changed it?
Follow your model’s alert-clearing procedure before changing batteries again. For the Yale devices covered above, a manual thumbturn does not clear the alert: the lock must be operated through Yale Home three times over Bluetooth or through a Yale Connect Wi-Fi Bridge. If the warning persists 24 hours after that procedure, Yale recommends contacting support.
For other brands, check the model-specific instructions and app status before assuming the new batteries are defective. Battery type can affect alert behavior, so verify that the installed cells match the manual. If a compatible replacement does not resolve the warning, contact the manufacturer’s support rather than relying on a generic reset procedure.
What can shorten battery life or affect lock performance?
On the cited Kwikset families, door or strike-plate misalignment can add friction and increase battery demand. Kwikset also says turning off lock sounds and lock LED status in the app can reduce consumption. Before adjusting these settings, consider whether audible or visual status cues are useful to you; reducing them trades feedback for lower power use. Kwikset: Battery support
