Before you leave, check the official 511 or transportation-agency service for every region your route crosses. Review closures, incidents, construction, detours, and traffic—not just congestion—then use a navigation app or community report as a secondary signal if helpful.
Find the official road-information service for your route
Road-condition information is regional, so there is no single 511 page that covers every trip. In the United States, search for “511” plus the state name, or look for the transportation department’s road-conditions page. For a route crossing a state or provincial border, check each jurisdiction along the way. Ontario 511 is one Canadian example.
Examples of regional services include Bay Area 511, SoCal511, Alaska 511, AZ 511, NJ 511, and NCDOT’s travel information. The service’s coverage, map layers, telephone options, and alert features depend on the region.
What to check before setting out
When the service lets you enter or select a route, use that option to focus on roads you plan to take. Otherwise, inspect the relevant highways and connecting roads on its map or in its traffic list.
#1 Best Overall
- 6” high-resolution navigator includes map updates of North America
- Hands-free calling when paired with your compatible smartphone with BLUETOOTH technology and convenient Garmin voice assist lets you ask for directions to places you want to go
- Road trip–ready features include the HISTORY database of notable sites, a U.S. national parks directory, Tripadvisor traveler ratings and millions of Foursquare POIs
- Driver alerts for things such as school zones, sharp curves and speed changes help encourage safer driving and increase situational awareness
- Access live traffic, fuel prices, parking, weather and smart notifications when you pair this navigator with your compatible smartphone running the Garmin Drive app
- Closures and incidents: Look for blocked roads, crashes, and other reported disruptions.
- Construction and roadwork: Check for lane closures, work zones, and scheduled restrictions.
- Detours and route alerts: See whether an advisory changes the route or adds a restriction.
- Traffic speeds or conditions: Congestion can affect travel even when a road remains open.
Available tools vary. SoCal511, for example, describes traffic lists filterable by direction, time, county, location, and roadway, alongside maps showing closures, incidents, cameras, and route information. A camera image or message sign can provide useful context where offered, but not every service provides the same features.
Use apps and community reports as a supplement
A navigation app or community-reported incident can provide another signal, but check the local agency’s service for official closure and roadwork information. Some regional 511 services combine agency information with crowdsourced reports; that is not a feature to assume everywhere.

- Bright, high-resolution 5” glass capacitive touchscreen display lets you easily view your route
- Get more situational awareness with alerts for school zones, speed changes, sharp curves and more
- View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones
- View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
- Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
Alaska 511 says Waze incidents and closures appear on its site “in addition to official information reported by AKDOT.” That describes Alaska’s service and should not be read as a policy or integration shared by all 511 providers.
Compare services if more than one covers your trip
When choosing which service to consult, check whether it is operated by or linked to the transportation authority responsible for the route, and whether it covers the roads you will use—not only major highways. Also compare the information and access options that matter for your trip:

Feature sets differ by region. Bay Area 511, for instance, says its incident information comes from the California Highway Patrol’s Computer Aided Dispatch system, while construction and event information comes from several sources, including Caltrans’ Lane Closure System. That is a local example, not a description of how every service gathers data.

Make your check before departure: a closure or traffic condition can change after you look. If you need information while already driving, Bay Area 511 advises calling 511 for voice-activated information or pulling over before checking a smartphone. Do not interact with a phone while driving.
No regional map should be treated as a guarantee that every road restriction is shown. Use the official advisories for the area, and check again before a later leg if your trip spans multiple regions or conditions may have changed.
