On your PS5, open Settings > Storage to see how much console storage is free and how it is being used. If you have an M.2 SSD installed, check its space separately under Settings > Storage > M.2 SSD Storage. If space is tight, you can manage installed games, use compatible expanded storage, or delete a game and download it again later.
Check how much PS5 storage is free
- From the PS5 home screen, select Settings.
- Select Storage.
- Review the free space and the breakdown of storage use, including games and apps, media, and saved data.
If an M.2 SSD is installed, select M.2 SSD Storage from the Storage screen to see its capacity and contents separately. PlayStation’s M.2 SSD installation guide describes that screen and the requirements for adding a drive.
See which games and apps are using space
Open Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps to review installed titles and manage what is on the console. Select a title to see available actions. Some games let you remove selected components, such as add-ons, rather than deleting everything; where Customize appears, use it to check which parts can be removed.
Deleting a game or application does not erase the purchase from your account. PlayStation says deleted games and apps can be downloaded again from your game library. Whether that is convenient depends on your internet connection and how often you want to play the title. See PlayStation’s guide to managing PS5 console storage.

Choose the right way to make room

These distinctions are outlined in PlayStation’s storage solutions overview and storage management guide. A regular USB drive used for saves or captures is not automatically configured as USB extended storage; the intended use and setup differ.
Check compatibility before buying a drive
For an M.2 SSD
Confirm that the drive meets PlayStation’s current M.2 SSD specifications and is compatible with your particular PS5 model before buying. The requirements and installation steps are in PlayStation’s M.2 SSD guide. Do not assume a drive will work based only on its capacity or appearance.

For USB extended storage
Check PlayStation’s current guidance for supported USB extended storage and the console’s setup process. Choose this option with the PS5 transfer requirement in mind: PS5 games stored there are archived until moved back, while compatible PS4 games can run from the drive.
Keep saves and captures separate from game installs
Saved data, screenshots, and video clips are managed separately from installed game files. PlayStation’s storage guide explains that PS5 and PS4 saves can use PlayStation Plus cloud storage, while PS4 saves can also be copied to a regular USB drive. Screenshots and video clips can also be copied to USB, subject to the guide’s limits. A drive used for these copies is not the same thing as USB extended storage for games.

Check an installed M.2 SSD
To see how much room remains on an installed expansion drive, open Settings > Storage > M.2 SSD Storage. Review that screen separately from Console Storage before deciding which drive should hold a new game.
