For the latest NHL lineup picture, start with NHL.com’s Projected lineups page, confirm the matchup and date, then compare it with the newest NHL Status Report and the teams’ latest news. Treat a projected lineup as a forecast, not confirmation of who will dress; check again close to puck drop for late changes.
How to check a specific NHL game
- Open the projected lineups page. Find the game and verify both teams and the date. NHL.com’s game entries show expected forward combinations and defense pairs, goalie names, scratches, injured players, and status-report context. The page’s published October 2, 2026 format is a current example, not a promise that future daily entries will always look the same.
- Read the newest dated update. Check the NHL Status Report and each team’s latest news for developments such as an injury ruling, injured-reserve move, activation, or return. The league’s December 14, 2025 report illustrates dated activation and return-to-lineup updates.
- Check again near puck drop. A projection you saw earlier in the day may no longer reflect the team’s plans. The NHL pages cited here do not promise a universal posting deadline or fixed update schedule.
These sources are useful for searches such as “NHL lineups tonight,” “who is starting in goal tonight,” “is [player] playing tonight,” and “NHL injury report today.” Always match the result to the correct game date; a report for another day or matchup can be easy to misread.
What a projected lineup does—and does not—confirm
A projected line combination or listed goalie is an expectation, not a guarantee that the player will dress or start. The submitted starting lineup is a separate game procedure. Under Rule 7.1 of the NHL’s 2024-25 Official Rules, the visiting team’s manager or coach names the starting lineup when submitting the game lineup before play. That rule distinguishes the formal submission from an earlier public projection; it does not make a projection final.

An injured player is not automatically on injured reserve (IR). NHL Hockey Operations Guidelines assign IR determinations to club medical staff under club standards. The guidelines describe a minimum seven-day inability-to-play threshold and, once placed on IR, at least seven days of game ineligibility. IR is therefore a roster designation, not simply another way of saying that a player has an injury.

- Compare dates and timestamps. A newer report about the same game is generally more useful than an older one.
- Identify what kind of report it is. Separate a projected lineup from a team announcement or the submitted starting lineup.
- Read the player’s exact status. “Injured,” “scratched,” “activated,” and “on injured reserve” describe different situations.
- Prefer the newest directly relevant league or team update. If official reporting has not settled whether a player is available, keep that uncertainty rather than treating a projection as confirmation.
The sources cited here do not establish a guaranteed leaguewide injury-disclosure deadline or a universal required level of detail about injuries. That makes the update’s date and wording important when availability remains unsettled.
