To check latency from Perth to Sydney, run repeated ping tests from a device on the Perth connection to the specific Sydney server you care about. Record the destination, whether you used IPv4 or IPv6, the test time, average/minimum/maximum round-trip time, and packet loss. Use traceroute or MTR to inspect the visible route, but treat looking-glass results as measurements from the provider’s network—not from your home connection.
Run a ping test to the Sydney endpoint that matters
Latency is round-trip time: how long a packet takes to travel from your device to a test server and back. The ACCC defines it as “the average time it takes to send a packet of data to the test server and back” on its broadband performance data page.
- Choose a destination. Use the actual Sydney server or service you want to assess, if you can identify it. A ping to a generic public host does not necessarily represent the route to a game, work server, or website you use.
- Run the test from Perth. On a device connected to the Perth network, ping the destination repeatedly or for a sustained interval. Keep the target the same for later comparisons.
- Record the context. Note the hostname or IP address, IPv4 or IPv6, date and time, source connection, number or duration of probes, replies, packet loss, and minimum, average, and maximum latency. If available, include jitter or another measure of variation.
- Repeat when it matters. Run tests at different times, including during the period when you notice a problem. One result is only a snapshot because network conditions vary.
Telstra International’s Looking Glass provides ping results with minimum, maximum, average, standard deviation, and loss fields. It accepts an IP address or hostname and offers IPv4 and IPv6 options. Telstra notes that its hostname resolution may differ from your local resolver; if the specific destination IP matters, test that IP directly.
Use traceroute or MTR to inspect the route
Ping gives an end-to-end round-trip measurement to the chosen target. Traceroute and MTR add a view of the intermediate hops visible along the route. On Windows, the common command is tracert; on macOS and Linux, it is traceroute. MTR combines repeated probing with a route view.

Use the output to see where the visible path changes or where reported times rise, but do not assume that a slow or missing reply from one intermediate hop means the final application traffic is delayed by the same amount. The end-to-end ping to the service remains the more relevant measure of its round-trip latency.
Understand what a looking glass measures
A looking glass runs a test from a network operator’s point of presence (POP) or other provider-controlled location. It can help investigate routing, but its result is not the same as a ping from a Perth household connection. Routes can differ by source network and may be asymmetric.

- Telstra International Looking Glass offers ping, trace route, BGP, and POP-to-POP tests. Telstra says POP-to-POP latency is measured exclusively within its own network and that results vary with network conditions.
- Ransom IT’s Looking Glass provides separate Perth and Sydney endpoints, with target and diagnostic-method controls. A test started from one of these endpoints is provider-originated data, not a measurement from your own Perth connection.
If you use a Sydney looking glass to test a Perth target, or a provider’s POP-to-POP function, label the source and scope clearly. Those results can help examine a provider’s route, but they should not be presented as the latency a Perth customer receives to a Sydney service.
Compare results without mixing unlike tests
For a meaningful comparison between two tests or providers, keep the following factors constant where possible, or disclose how they differ:

- Source location and network, including whether it is a household connection or provider POP.
- Destination hostname or IP address.
- IP version: IPv4 or IPv6.
- Time window and number or duration of probes.
- Average latency and its spread, along with packet loss and any available variation measure.
- Test scope, such as residential-to-host versus provider-POP-to-POP.
If you are trying to isolate a possible Wi-Fi issue, an optional test from a wired device can help distinguish the local wireless segment from the wider route. It does not change the Perth-to-Sydney path itself.

The available sources do not establish an authoritative current latency target for the Perth–Sydney city pair, or a guaranteed value for a particular NBN technology or retail service provider. A result depends on the source connection, destination, route, IP version, test time, and network conditions. Judge a measurement against the needs of the application you are testing rather than an unsupported universal “good ping” number. The ACCC notes that high latency can affect real-time activities such as gaming and video conferencing.

The ACCC’s 2024 Measuring Broadband Australia Report 25 reported a 10.7 ms mean latency across a national sample of 1,282 units; within that report’s sample, the mean was 15.2 ms for FTTN and 7.4 ms for FTTP. These are aggregate broadband measurements, not Perth-to-Sydney route benchmarks or individual plan guarantees. The ACCC published its final Measuring Broadband Australia performance report on 17 June 2026, when the program concluded.
