Use MetService’s rain radar to see recent precipitation near your South Island stops, then check the location forecast, official warnings and NZTA road conditions before you travel. Radar shows observed returns—not a forecast or proof that a road is safe, open or dry.

Check recent rain around your planned stops

  1. Open MetService’s official weather app or its website and find the rain radar view.

  2. Inspect the map around the places on your itinerary, not just your starting point. For example, check Christchurch, Dunedin, Queenstown or Wānaka if they are relevant to your route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. Look at recent radar returns and their movement to understand where precipitation has been observed. The app also offers three-day rain forecast maps; use those for expected rain rather than treating the radar image as a forecast. MetService lists forecasts for more than 3,000 locations.

MetService says it operates ten weather radars across New Zealand. Its 28 November 2024 Canterbury radar announcement described national radar imagery as updating every seven and a half minutes. These are service details reported at that time and may change.

Know what radar can miss

A radar image is useful but not a complete, ground-level map of rain. MetService explains that terrain can block the radar beam. The beam also rises higher above the ground as it travels farther, so precipitation falling from low cloud at a distance may go undetected. This matters in the South Island’s mountainous terrain: a blank or weak return does not establish that a road or valley is dry. See MetService’s explanation in “Flying under the RADAR”.

Check the forecast and official warnings

For each relevant location, check MetService’s forecast and any severe-weather advisories for the area and time of travel. Radar describes observed precipitation; forecasts and warnings provide expected conditions and hazard context. MetService is New Zealand’s only authorised provider of severe weather warnings, which use outlooks, watches and warnings. A watch means severe conditions may occur, but are not imminent or certain; keep monitoring official updates. Read MetService’s warning definitions.

Heavy rain can bring surface flooding, slips and difficult driving conditions. A warning is not a road-status report, so pair weather information with transport updates.

Recheck close to departure

Forecasts, warnings and road conditions are time-sensitive. Check the official weather and road sources again shortly before leaving, and keep monitoring them if conditions are changing. Do not use radar alone to decide whether a route is safe or open. For an example of why road advisories matter during unsettled weather, NZTA published a historical advisory on 19 June 2026; it describes conditions at that time, not a current forecast: “Messy weather picture for highway travel”.
