To check your iPhone’s local storage, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. To choose a capacity for a new phone, use your current storage as a starting point, then account for what you expect to keep downloaded or saved locally. iCloud storage is separate: paying for more iCloud space does not increase the iPhone’s built-in capacity.
How do I check storage on my iPhone?
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then iPhone Storage.
- Review the storage summary, any recommendations iOS displays, and the list of apps with the space each uses.
Look especially at Photos, videos, games, downloaded music or films, and messaging attachments. This is a snapshot of your current use, not a precise forecast for a new phone: your photo library, app selection, downloads, and video habits may change.
Is iCloud storage the same as iPhone storage?
No. iPhone storage is the local capacity built into the device. iCloud storage is a separate quota for services such as device backups, iCloud Photos, and iCloud Drive. To check it, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud. Apple says new iCloud accounts include 5 GB of free iCloud storage; that allowance is not extra capacity inside the phone. If iCloud storage fills up, backups may stop, new photos and videos may not upload to iCloud Photos, and iCloud Drive or other apps may stop staying up to date across devices. Apple’s photo and video storage guidance explains that with iCloud Photos and Optimize Storage enabled, full-resolution originals are kept in iCloud while space-saving copies remain on the iPhone as needed. This can reduce local photo-library use, but requires sufficient iCloud space and does not increase the phone’s built-in capacity.

How much iPhone storage do I need?
There is no single capacity that suits everyone. Compare your present use, likely growth, and how much content you want available locally; then check the options for the exact iPhone model you plan to buy. Capacities vary by model and generation, and usable space is lower than the advertised capacity. Apple says the space used by software and included apps varies with model, software version, and settings.
- Measure current use. In iPhone Storage, note the amount used and which categories take the most space.
- Estimate what you will keep on the phone. Consider video recording or editing, large games, downloaded music and films, and whether you want your full photo library stored locally.
- Compare the exact model’s available capacities. Leave room for future use, and weigh the price difference against how willing you are to manage or offload files.
For context, Apple announced the iPhone 17 in 256GB and 512GB configurations in 2025. Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro specifications say a standard configuration uses approximately 12GB to 24GB for iOS 26 and Apple apps. That range is specific to the stated 2025 Pro models and configuration; it is not a universal deduction for every iPhone or future software release. How to free space without losing files you want
- Review the recommendations shown on the iPhone Storage screen.
- Delete content you no longer need, or transfer wanted photos and videos to a computer before removing local copies.
- Merge duplicate photos or videos where appropriate.
- If you use iCloud Photos, remember that deleting a photo or video on one device also deletes it from other devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Back up anything you want to keep before deleting it.
If the issue is a full iCloud quota rather than a full phone, review backups and cloud content you no longer need or consider upgrading iCloud+. Those steps address cloud storage, not the iPhone’s built-in capacity.
