Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health to check an iPhone’s battery. Depending on the model and iOS version, the screen may be called Battery Health & Charging. Use Maximum Capacity as one clue—not a deadline—and decide based on the service message, peak-performance status, shutdowns, and whether the phone lasts long enough for your needs.
How to check battery health on an iPhone
Apple’s battery-health information is available on iPhone 6 and later, but the menu label and details vary by model and iOS version.
- iPhone 6 and later: Start at Settings > Battery > Battery Health. With iOS 16.1 or later, Apple’s pre-owned-iPhone instructions use Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Apple’s battery-health guide and pre-owned iPhone guidance describe these paths.
- iPhone 11, 12, 13, and 14: Apple’s model-specific instructions use Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. See Apple’s instructions for these models.
- iPhone 15 and later with iOS 17.4 or later: Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health. In addition to health and maximum capacity, this screen can show cycle count, manufacture date, first-use date, and whether replacement is recommended. These additional fields are not available on every iPhone. Apple’s model-specific instructions explain the details.
If the menu wording differs, search Settings for “Battery Health.” The exact screen depends on the device and software version.
What Maximum Capacity and Peak Performance mean
Maximum Capacity
Maximum Capacity compares the battery’s capacity with its capacity when new. Apple explains that “Maximum battery capacity measures the device battery capacity in relation to when it was new.” As the battery chemically ages, it may hold less charge, so the phone can run for less time between charges. The percentage is not a laboratory diagnosis or a universal replacement deadline. Consider it alongside your daily runtime and any iOS message about service.
Peak Performance Capability
This section indicates whether the battery can supply the power the iPhone needs during peak demand. Aged batteries, low charge, and cold conditions can make an unexpected shutdown more likely. After a shutdown related to insufficient peak power, iOS may apply performance management to help prevent another one. Apple distinguishes this from the basic system management used for thermal and voltage safety, which cannot be turned off. Apple explains battery performance management.

What the 80% figure and cycle count tell you
Apple’s design benchmarks are model-specific and assume ideal conditions:

These figures are Apple’s 2026 guidance; actual capacity depends on how the device is used and charged. A complete charge cycle means using a total of 100% of battery capacity, even if that use is spread across multiple charges. Apple’s battery information describes its cycle benchmarks.

For applicable AppleCare plans, Apple says battery service is covered at no extra charge if capacity drops below 80%. Check your plan, region, and current terms: this coverage condition does not mean every phone above 80% will meet your needs, or that every phone below it must be replaced immediately. Review AppleCare coverage.
When to arrange service—and when to monitor
Consider service
Arranging an inspection is sensible if iOS recommends replacement or says the battery is significantly degraded, if battery life is materially disrupting everyday use, or if unexpected shutdowns or battery-related performance problems persist. An “unable to verify” message is also a reason to seek an assessment because the displayed battery-health information may be unavailable or unreliable.

Apple says a significantly degraded warning does not itself indicate a safety issue. It does mean you may notice battery and performance problems; service can restore performance and capacity. Apple’s explanation of battery warnings includes the message: “Your battery’s health is significantly degraded. An Apple Authorised Service Provider can replace the battery to restore full performance and capacity.”
Monitoring may be enough for now
If the phone reports normal peak performance, shows no replacement recommendation, lasts long enough for your routine, and has no disruptive shutdowns or performance problems, you may choose to keep using it and check again later. This is a practical decision aid, not an additional Apple-defined threshold.

If an iPhone 11 reports recalibration
Apple introduced battery-health reporting recalibration for iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max with iOS 14.5 to correct inaccurate estimates for some users. It runs during regular charge cycles and can take a few weeks. If a recalibration message appears, allow the process to finish before judging the updated reading. Apple offers in-person service at an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider, as well as a mail-in option. An inspection is needed for a personalized estimate. Out-of-warranty estimates may be subject to tax or shipping fees, and Apple Authorized Service Providers may set their own prices. Availability varies by location and parts availability, so check the current estimate for your exact model and region rather than relying on a general price. Check Apple’s battery service options.
When comparing a service option, weigh:
- Total cost for your exact iPhone model and region.
- Part source and repair process.
- Repair warranty and whether the work is covered by warranty, AppleCare, or local consumer law.
- Turnaround time and convenience.
Apple and Apple Authorized Service Provider repairs use genuine Apple parts and processes. Independent Repair Providers can access genuine Apple resources, but their repairs are not covered by Apple’s warranty or AppleCare; the provider may offer its own warranty. Apple’s Parts and Service History guidance explains repair-provider distinctions.
Apple says that, for most customers, a professional repair provider with certified technicians using genuine Apple parts is the best route to a safe and reliable repair. Self Service Repair offers genuine parts, tools, and manuals only to experienced repairers, in certain regions, and for specific iPhone models introduced in 2021 or later. When assessing a pre-owned phone, check both its battery screen and Settings > General > About for Parts and Service History, where supported by the model and software. If the battery is marked “Unknown” or cannot be verified, the health information may be unavailable or unreliable.
