Look for “ARC” or “eARC” beside an HDMI port on your TV, then confirm the exact model’s specifications in its manual or official support page. A missing label does not prove the TV lacks ARC: manufacturers are advised, but not required, to mark ARC-capable ports. Only the designated ARC/eARC port should be used to send TV audio to a compatible soundbar or receiver.
Find your TV’s ARC port
- Inspect the HDMI sockets. Look beside each port on the TV for “ARC” or “eARC.” Check the port diagram in the setup guide as well; Sony recommends checking the manual’s port specifications. A label identifies the port to use for return audio, not a feature shared automatically by every HDMI socket.
- Look up the exact model if the label is missing or unclear. Find the model number on the TV’s label, in its settings, or on its documentation, then search the manufacturer’s official support site for that model’s manual or specifications. HDMI Licensing Administrator says ARC labeling is recommended but not required, so the port specification is more conclusive than the presence or absence of a marking. Check that your audio device can use it
To send TV sound to a soundbar or receiver over HDMI, both devices need compatible ARC or eARC ports. Connect the TV’s designated ARC/eARC port to the corresponding port on the audio device, following the devices’ labels and setup diagrams. Do not assume another HDMI socket on either device can return audio. Sony and Samsung both describe connecting the TV’s designated port to a compatible external audio device. You generally do not need a special HDMI cable as an ARC prerequisite: HDMI Licensing Administrator says HDMI cables support ARC when connected to ARC-enabled devices. The key checks are the ports at both ends and connecting the cable to those ports.
If the devices are connected but there is no sound
- Confirm the cable is in the designated ports. Check the TV and audio-device labels or manuals rather than trying an arbitrary HDMI input.
- Check the TV’s sound-output setting. Select the external audio device or HDMI audio option if the TV provides one; the exact label and menu location depend on the model.
- Check HDMI-CEC. ARC operation may rely on CEC settings. Samsung calls its CEC implementation Anynet+, but menu names and paths vary by model series and year. An LG owner manual also shows ARC setup through a CEC control menu; that example applies to the models covered by that manual, not every LG TV. - Recheck compatibility in both manuals. Verify that the specific TV port and soundbar or receiver support the relevant return-audio feature and that the manufacturers’ setup instructions are being followed.
If your TV does not support ARC
If the TV’s model specifications show no ARC/eARC port, optical digital audio may be an alternative when both the TV and soundbar or receiver have compatible optical ports. Sony also describes an audio-cable fallback when optical cannot be connected; consult the instructions for your exact devices to see which connection they support.
