Sometimes—but after more than a year, recovery is unlikely under the carrier policies reviewed. There is no universal grace period: the outcome depends on the country, carrier, account type, reason service ended, and whether the number is still held for you or has been released. Contact the original carrier and ask it to check the old number before paying for a replacement SIM or topping up.

What you need to recover is the number, not just the SIM card

A SIM card is the physical or digital credential used to access a carrier account; the phone number is assigned and managed by the carrier. Replacing a damaged or expired SIM may restore service only if the account and number are still eligible. It does not, by itself, reactivate a terminated account or reclaim a number that has been released or assigned to someone else. Vodafone Qatar and T-Mobile both describe carrier-controlled service and number policies in their official guidance (Vodafone Qatar terms; T-Mobile prepaid cancellation).

General policy pages cannot establish the live status of an individual number. The original carrier has to check whether your account is suspended, terminated, reserved, or released for reassignment.

Why a year-old deactivation is difficult to reverse

Carriers set different deadlines for different situations. Their rules may measure time from the last use, last payment, balance expiry, or the date the account entered a particular status. The examples below are country- and circumstance-specific, not interchangeable rules or promises that a number will be reassigned on a particular day.

Carrier or authority Published rule and conditions What it means after a year
Reliance Jio, India Jio says prepaid service may be deactivated at its discretion after 90 days of specified non-use. For qualifying non-use deactivations, it describes reactivation within 15 days of deactivation with a Rs. 20 payment, re-KYC, and applicable recharge. The same policy page discusses safe custody for postpaid service. Jio policy The stated 15-day reactivation period is far shorter than a year. Check with Jio whether your particular account remains recoverable.
Vodafone Qatar Its prepaid terms say a number can be reactivated within 180 days from the last prepaid recharge by contacting customer care to unbar and reactivate it. Service becomes unavailable if another plan is not purchased within 120 days of balance expiry; the terms reserve a right to reuse the number. Vodafone Qatar terms The published reactivation window does not extend to a year after the last recharge.
T-Mobile, United States T-Mobile says most prepaid accounts cancel automatically after 120 days in Not Paid status under the listed conditions, and accounts in that status for more than 120 days may be canceled with the number lost. T-Mobile prepaid cancellation This is a cancellation policy, not proof that every number is reassigned precisely at 120 days. T-Mobile must check the number’s current status.
Cambodia A Telecommunication Regulator of Cambodia announcement dated 22 December 2025 requires operators, from 1 January 2026, to allow top-up reactivation for numbers expired no more than 180 days, retain balances during that period, and send at least two reminders before it ends. Regulator announcement The specified top-up window is still shorter than a year and applies under the announced national measures.
Hong Kong An Office of the Communications Authority notice dated 24 February 2023 describes a special process for prepaid cards suspended for failure to complete real-name registration by the deadline. The card had to be unexpired and retain value; service was to be restored within no more than two days after registration, depending on registration volume. OFCA notice This limited registration remedy is not a general route for recovering a SIM deactivated through ordinary inactivity a year ago.
Orange Egypt Orange’s FAQ says prepaid lines are deactivated 90 days after last use and may be reactivated within 15 days after that period. For postpaid lines, it gives 180 days before deactivation and a 15-day reactivation period afterward. Orange Egypt FAQ The listed reactivation periods are brief compared with a year; ask Orange whether your line remains eligible.

How to check whether you can get your old number back

  1. Identify the original service. Note the carrier, country, whether the account was prepaid or postpaid, and the approximate date of last use, payment, or plan expiry.
  2. Contact the carrier through an official channel. Use its official app, website, phone support, or store. Ask the representative to check the original number’s live status—not just whether the old SIM card can be replaced.
  3. Ask specific status and eligibility questions. Find out whether the account is suspended or terminated, whether the number is still held for you, whether it has entered a recycling or quarantine period, and what proof of ownership, identification, payment, re-registration, or in-person visit is required.
  4. Follow the carrier’s recovery steps if the number is still eligible. Confirm whether service can return on the old SIM or requires a carrier-issued replacement SIM or eSIM. Do not assume a top-up will help unless the carrier says it applies to your account.
  5. Stop if the number cannot be recovered. If the carrier confirms that it has been reassigned or is no longer recoverable, use the official recovery process for accounts that relied on the number for login or account recovery, and update those accounts to a number you control.

Why a top-up or new SIM may not solve the problem

A top-up can be part of a valid reactivation process in some carrier-specific windows—for example, Cambodia’s announced rules cover eligible numbers expired no more than 180 days. That does not make topping up a year-old number a general recovery method. Likewise, a replacement SIM may provide access to an account only after the carrier confirms that the number is still available to you; buying a generic SIM or starter kit cannot reclaim a released number.

Before spending money, ask the original carrier to verify the number’s status and explain the exact steps, if any, for restoring it.
