Windows 11 does not make administrator status obvious in every part of Settings. The most reliable checks are the account-type page in Control Panel and the signed-in user’s group membership in Command Prompt.

Use the first method for a quick account-type check. Use whoami /groups or whoami /all when you need to inspect the groups and privileges in the current session’s access token.

Method 1: Check your account type in Control Panel

This is Microsoft’s documented graphical method for checking whether the current local account is configured as an administrator.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Control Panel, then open it.
  3. Select User Accounts.
  4. Select Change your account type.
  5. Check the account-type selection. If Administrator is selected, the account is configured as an administrator. If Standard is selected, it is not.

This check concerns the Windows account type, not whether you sign in with a Microsoft account or a local account. Either type of sign-in can be configured as Administrator or Standard.

Method 2: Check a different account in Settings

If you need to inspect another account on the PC, use the current Windows 11 account-management page:

  1. Open Settings with Windows + I.
  2. Go to Accounts > Other users. Microsoft may label this section Other Users in some references.
  3. Find the account you want to inspect.
  4. Open the account’s flyout and select Account options > Change account type.
  5. Read the value in the account-type dropdown. It will identify the account as Administrator or Standard User.

If you are authorized to change it, select a different account type and click OK. Windows may require administrator approval before it saves the change.

Method 3: Use Command Prompt to check group membership

The graphical account-type label is useful, but group membership is more informative when you are troubleshooting permissions, a work PC, or a domain account.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Open it normally; administrator mode is not required merely to inspect your own account’s groups.
  4. Run whoami.

This returns the domain and username for the account signed in to the current session. Then run whoami /groups.

Review the output for the local Administrators group. On a domain-joined computer, a domain group can also provide equivalent local administrative access, so do not rely only on the displayed username. Group membership is useful evidence, but it does not mean every process is already running with elevated privileges.

For a fuller view of the current access token, run whoami /all.

This displays the current username, security identifiers, groups, and privileges. It is the better command when you need to investigate why an account appears to be an administrator but an operation still fails.

Checking a domain-joined Windows 11 PC

Domain accounts can have additional account types, so Microsoft provides a separate Control Panel procedure:

  1. Open Control Panel > User Accounts > Change your account type.
  2. In the User Accounts window, select Properties.
  3. Open the Group Membership tab.
  4. Check whether Administrator is selected.

You can also use whoami /groups to see the groups attached to the current sign-in. On a company-managed computer, local administrator access may be granted through a domain security group rather than by assigning the individual account directly to the local Administrators group.

Optional: inspect the account record with net user

First identify the account name with whoami. Then query the account with net user <username>. For example, run net user alex.

net user displays detailed information about a local or domain user account. However, it is not the definitive test for effective administrator access. Use whoami /groups or whoami /all to inspect group and token information.

What the UAC prompt does—and does not—prove

A User Account Control prompt does not, by itself, prove that you are an administrator. Windows can show an administrator approval prompt for an account that is already configured as an administrator, while a standard user may be asked for administrator credentials from another person.

Similarly, being listed as an administrator does not mean every program automatically runs with unrestricted administrative access. User Account Control can still require confirmation before an administrative operation proceeds. Opening an application, installing one particular program, or getting past a prompt is therefore not a reliable substitute for checking account type or group membership.

Do not use “Your info” as the administrator check

A commonly repeated Windows 11 path is Settings > Accounts > Your info. That page is used for information such as whether the sign-in is connected to a Microsoft account or is a local account, along with account-picture functions. It is not Microsoft’s current documented location for checking whether the account is Administrator or Standard.

Use Control Panel > User Accounts > Change your account type for the documented current-account check, or Settings > Accounts > Other users > Account options > Change account type when managing another account.

Quick answer

To check your own Windows 11 administrator status, open Control Panel > User Accounts > Change your account type. If Administrator is selected, the account is configured as an administrator. For a more technical check, run whoami /groups and look for the local Administrators group or a domain group that grants equivalent rights.

FAQ

How do I know if I am an administrator in Windows 11?

Open Start, search for Control Panel, and select User Accounts > Change your account type. If Administrator is selected, your account is configured as an administrator. You can also run whoami /groups in Command Prompt and inspect the group memberships.

Does a UAC prompt mean I have administrator rights?

No. An administrator account can receive a UAC confirmation prompt, while a standard user can receive a prompt asking another administrator to enter credentials. Check the account type or group membership instead.

Can a Microsoft account be an administrator in Windows 11?

Yes. Microsoft-account and local-account status are separate from the Administrator or Standard account classification. Check the account type in Control Panel or Settings.

Why can’t I find the administrator setting under Your info?

Your info is used for Microsoft-account or local-account details and account-picture functions. The documented account-type check is Control Panel > User Accounts > Change your account type. To manage another account, use Settings > Accounts > Other users.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What command shows whether my account belongs to the Administrators group?

Open Command Prompt and run whoami /groups. Look for the local Administrators group or a domain group that grants equivalent local administrative access. Use whoami /all for groups, privileges, and security identifiers.

What is the difference between account type and effective administrator access?

Account type describes whether Windows classifies the account as Administrator or Standard. Effective access also depends on group membership, the current security token, domain policy, and UAC. That is why group and token checks are useful when the graphical label does not explain a permissions problem.

The Bottom Line

For the straightforward Windows 11 check, use Control Panel > User Accounts > Change your account type. For troubleshooting or domain PCs, run whoami /groups and, if necessary, whoami /all. Do not treat a UAC prompt, a successful app launch, or the Microsoft/local account label as proof of administrator access.
