Before moving a workload to Gemini, check the exact model and usage mode on Google’s pricing page, then inspect the active project’s live quotas in Google AI Studio. There is no single Gemini API price or universal free quota: costs and limits vary by model, mode, and project, and Google says published rate limits are not guaranteed.
1. Identify the model and usage mode you plan to use
Write down the exact candidate model identifier and the capabilities your workload needs. Note whether the model is preview or experimental, since Google says those models have more restricted limits. Also identify how you expect to submit work: for example, standard or batch mode, if the selected model offers them, or a request that uses a tool.
Do not compare a generic “Gemini” price. Google’s Gemini Developer API pricing page lists model-specific prices and distinguishes usage modes and billing dimensions. Availability, prices, and free-tier access can change, so use the current row for the model and mode you intend to deploy.
2. Estimate the cost for a realistic workload
Compare all applicable pricing dimensions
Input tokens are only part of the estimate. Google’s billing FAQ identifies input and output tokens, cached tokens, and cached-token storage duration as pricing inputs. Check any applicable tool fees and make sure a batch or other mode’s pricing row applies to the model and tier you plan to use.

- Estimate prompt and context input, including expected context growth.
- Estimate output length as well as request volume; output pricing may differ substantially from input pricing.
- Include caching and storage costs if your design uses them.
- Check tool charges and the exact usage mode rather than assuming standard pricing applies.
As a dated example from Google’s pricing page checked in 2026, Gemini 3.8 Flash Standard paid usage lists input at $0.75 per million tokens through December 31, 2026, and $1.50 per million starting January 1, 2027. Its output rate is $3.75 per million tokens through December 31, 2026, rising to $7.50 beginning January 1, 2027. These are rates for that model and mode, not general Gemini prices.
Check what “free” means for that model
Google’s pricing page lists free input and output tokens for some models, while its billing FAQ says free-tier details vary by selected model. Check the target model’s current pricing row and the intended use case. A free-token listing does not establish unlimited throughput, nor does it mean every model is available on the free tier.

Review the current data-use terms for the specific product and account as well. Google distinguishes terms between free and paid tiers on its pricing page; do not assume that moving to paid changes only the bill.
3. Inspect the live limits for the correct project
In Google AI Studio, select the project that will make the API calls and open its active rate limits and usage. Google’s Rate limits documentation says limits vary by model and usage tier, and may change with tier or account status. The dashboard is the place to verify the limits currently attached to your project.

Google states: “Rate limits are applied per project, not per API key.” If an organization has multiple projects or keys, verify the project that will actually serve the workload; adding another key to the same project does not create a separate project quota.
Read each applicable quota dimension
- RPM: requests per minute.
- Input TPM: input tokens per minute.
- RPD: requests per day. Google says this quota resets at midnight Pacific time.
- Model-specific limits: some models have additional dimensions, such as images per minute (IPM) or tokens per day (TPD).
Exceeding any applicable limit can cause a rate-limit error. Google also cautions: “Specified rate limits are not guaranteed and actual capacity may vary.” Treat the displayed values as the current project limits, not a promise of sustained capacity under every condition.

4. Check billing and tier conditions
Google’s rate-limit documentation describes tiers and qualifying conditions. Tier 1 follows linking an active billing account. Tier 2 is listed after $100 in paid usage and three days from the first successful payment; Tier 3 after $1,000 in paid usage and 30 days from the first successful payment. Whether the listed tier conditions or spend-based limits apply depends on billing history, usage tier, and account standing; they do not establish a particular model quota for your project.
For applicable Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 accounts, Google lists spend-based limits of $10, $50, and $200 respectively per rolling 10-minute window. Check the documentation and your project rather than treating those amounts as general API spending caps.

Google says upgrading to paid requires Cloud Billing and raises rate limits. For setup context, use the Gemini API getting started guide. Confirm the billing arrangement and current account-specific terms before relying on paid-tier access; a generic cloud credit offer should not be assumed to cover Gemini API calls.
5. Compare the limits with your traffic pattern
Build the estimate around peaks as well as averages. A workload can stay below its daily request count yet hit a per-minute request or token limit during a burst. Compare expected traffic with every relevant dimension:
- Peak requests per minute, not just daily average requests.
- Input tokens per minute, including long contexts and concurrent calls.
- Daily request volume and the midnight-Pacific reset boundary.
- Expected output length and any model-specific image, audio, or other specialized calls.
When a workload approaches a displayed limit, plan for throttling or errors rather than assuming the published limit guarantees capacity. Revisit both pricing and project quotas before launch and after a material increase in traffic, and record the date of each comparison because the rates and limits are subject to change.
